Jason Castro Voted Off American Idol on May 7 Show

On American Idol this week, Jason Castro was voted off after a flub on his performance of "Mr. Tambourine Man." Was this a shock to America? Not really. After Simon told him to pack his suitcase, hopefully the Idol was prepared.

Though American Idol may be a tough gig, especially at the fast pace contestants are launched into the spotlight (Kelly Clarkson often refers to Idol as one of the hardest things she's done to date), it is important to remember your words. Sometimes pressure or

nerves do get the best of you, but this is a competition. Forgetting lyrics happen to the best of the best, however some of those artists attempt to compensate.

On Idol this season, mess-ups have happened quite frequently. We've seen lyric flub maybe about three times? New this season on the American version of Idol is the contestants being allowed to play an instrument (other countries have allowed this recently). Each week we've seen Jason Castro come out and strum his way into America's heart. But in a competition as publicly watched as this one, it is crucial to remember those words while playing and singing. It's no surprise Simon Cowell said what he said. I think it was the right choice as the remaining three contestants bring forth something stronger.

However, as for winning American Idol, I never would have seen it coming if he did. With the current wave of Top 40 mainstream, the singer-songwriter style would have not fit in. In a rotation filled with hip-hop riffs and rhythmic beats, an acoustic guitar and a smooth soft style won't make RCA the money they're looking for.

That's not to say Jason Castro won't go on and do well and make an attempt to break out into mainstream. After all, American Idol has turned into entertainment versus trying to find a good singer. The exposure contestants get in a few short weeks opens many doors even after being voted off. With the style of music he plays, it won't be hard for him to strike a deal with an independent label and go on to write and record music in the style he does best and market it to that genre.

Who will go home next week? Tune into American Idol on Fox!
