Did you know that is possible to be cancer resistant? Well, it seems that it could be a reality for humans soon. Researchers from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine have "created" what is said to be the first cancer resistant mouse.

Yes, a mouse to be resistant to the most aggressive types of cancer has been "created" by researchers working under the lead of Dr. Vivek Rangnekar, professor of Radiation Medicine. The new cancer resistant mouse is said to grow as any other mouse and have no defects. It is also said that the new cancer resistant mouse lives a few months more that the normal type of mice (of course it is cancer resistant).

The difference between the cancer resistant mouse and a normal one is in one gene called "Par-4." You do not need to know what this "Par-4" means, and as a matter of fact, I do not know, but what it seems to happens is that mice with the gene "Par-4" activated have the wonderful ability to kill cancer cells (but not healthy cells).

This rare, but exceptional, ability to kill cancer cells allows mice with the "Par-4" gene to be cancer resistant. The "Par-4" gene is referred by the source as a tumor-suppressor gene since this what it does kill cancer cells and suppress cancer growth.

Interestingly the study, published in journal Cancer Research, found that this gene Par-4 could be transplanted to other mice and give the new mice its activity and thus, its cancer fight activity. In fact, Dr. Rangnekar and colleagues took the "Par-4" gene and introduced it into the egg of a mouse. The descendants of this gene-implanted egg started to express the gene conferring the pups the ability to fight cancer thru its ability to kill selectively cancer cells.
