Home Remedies for Age Spots

To some people, finding their first age spots can be as traumatic as finding their first gray hair. Since age spots, or liver spots, often appear as we mature, many equate them with “getting old.” But age spots aren’t your body’s way of telling you you’re
over the hill. In fact, age spots can appear on individuals in their 20s or 30s.

The fact is, age spots are just harmless “freckles” that appear as a result of too much sun exposure. The more time you’ve spent in the sun, the more likely you are to get age spots on your arms, legs, the backs of your hands, and on your forehead.

Still, you might not find your age spots—which can look like dark freckles, moles, or bumps—attractive. If you are looking for ways to prevent age spots, or make the ones you have vanish, here are some home remedies.

Use Sunscreen to Prevent Age Spots

Since age spots are caused by sun exposure, the best way to prevent age spots is by using sunscreen. Sunscreen will also keep the age spots you already have from getting darker. Before going out into the sun, apply a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. Also, use products like body lotions and face moisturizers that contain sunscreen.

Use Lemon Juice to Make Age Spots Fade

Using a cotton ball or swab, apply lemon juice to your age spots twice a day. After using this treatment for six to eight weeks, your age spots will start to fade.

Look for Age Spot Treatments at the Drug Store

There are over-the-counter products, often called bleaching creams that will lighten age spots. Look for products that contain hydroquinone. When using these products, follow the directions carefully, and stop using if they cause skin irritation.

I had a chemical peel for acne preformed years ago when I was 28 years old. After the peel I was left with a dark age spot covering 1/3 of my forhead. It was so awful not even the heaviest makeup could cover it up. I had a terrible complex about it and felt that everyone was looking at my forhead. After trying many creams and considering lasers...I found info on lemons. I have been applying lemon juice 2 per day on my forhead and the discoloration has faded in half!!! I have been doing this now for a month or so...and will continue to. I feel confident in time it will completly dissapear. I AM SO HAPPY!!! I wish I would have known about this years ago. Before you spent tons of money on creams that don't work...or even spent more money on invasive lasers...try lemons first! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE---Except hyperpigmination. The lemon juice stings a bit. I wait for it to dry on my skin and then I wash it off. I really works! I want to tell the whole world about this natu

I got my age spots to almost permanently disappear by taking large doses of Vitamin C.

*Also try apple cider vinegar to fade spots and it makes skin smooth! dillute 2 parts water 1 part ACV (or experiement for how strong your skin can take it) and applied before bed is advised as it's smell is powerful! *Yogurt is said to have whitening effects (organic plain yogurt)

Good advice and well written article. I do not understand why anyone would find it traumatic finding either their first age spot or gray hair. http://health-pictures.com/age-spots.htm

To bad we can't convince all of the kids that lay out in the sun to be aware that someday they will have to deal with the marks of too much sun and aging. Nice article.
