Grand Theft Auto IV Reaps $500 Million in One Week
Grand Theft Auto IV brought in over $500 million in sales in it's first week. On opening day, April 29th, it had raked in nearly $310 million which is roughly 10$ million dollars more then Microsoft Corp's blockbuster game "Halo 3" Michael Pachter stated that the sales were well within his expectations.
The new video game is said to contain heavy violence, and the controversy over hidden sex scenes remain. Though it still receives stellar ratings, it's criticism remains equal. People who love the game, love it and those who hate it, hate. There doesn't seem to be a middle compromise.
This game has drawn the attention to the group (MADD) Mother's Against Drunk Drivers, they have sought out an adult rating due to it's allowing of virtual drivers to consume virtual alcohol. The Chicago Transit has removed ads due to it's "Mature" rating. Mature meaning not suitable for children under 17 years of age. Take-Two Interactive Software Company Inc. also sued the Chicago Transit Authority Monday on those grounds.
According to the Red Bluff Daily News the game portrays the character Niko Bellic, a European immigrant turned gangster. It follows him during his crime missions through a fictional Liberty City.
Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter believes that 12 million copies will be sold by the end of 2008. Previous versions of the game have sold more than 70 million.
The long waited for title is from Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc which is based in New York and are subject to a $2 Billion dollar hostile buy-out from competitor Electronic Arts Inc. Take-Two has repeatedly argued that the price is too low. Shares for Take Two were selling at $26.39. Electronic Arts Inc. offered $25.74 per share. The offer will expire on May 16.
Other top video game sales include Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Army of Two, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , among others. This just goes to show you that the competition is getting tougher, graphics getting better, and gamers are growing by the day.
