What You Should and Shouldn't Wear to an Informal Job Interview

When you think of a job interview what is the first thing that comes to mind? Two people in a business suit is the first thing that I often think of but this shouldn't always be the case. Informal job interviews are just as important as a business
interview but don't require the same attire.

If you are wandering what an informal job interview is, it is an interview for a company that will not require you to wear business attire such as a job with a tire shop. This type of interview will require you to dress informal. Dressing to formal may backfire on you when you are going to an informal job interview.

These tips will help you to decide what you should wear to an informal job interview to help you land the job that you want.

Shirts are a great place to start in the attire that you will be wearing. Men should opt for a shirt that has a collar and three buttons or you can wear a short sleeved shirt that buttons completely down. Try to avoid shirts with loud prints. Loud print shirts draw too much attention to the shirt and not enough to what you will be saying.

T-shirts can also be worn if they are solid printed but I would try to avoid these if at all possible. A t-shirt can give off the impression that you don't really care too much about the interview.

Women should wear shirts that are not too bright or loud. A plain colored shirt or wide striped shirt is great for an informal interview. If you wear a striped shirt, make sure the stripes do not go up and down. Floral printed shirts should also be avoided.

The pants that you wear are also very important in an informal job interview. Jeans are not appropriate to wear. Khaki pants or dark colored pants can be worn by both men and women. Corduroys are also a great choice for an informal interview and can be worn by both sexes.

Dresses can be worn by women or skirts if they prefer. I wouldn't advise wearing a dress because it can be too formal. A nice skirt with a nice shirt can be a great touch too an informal job interview.
