Business Networking sites are all the rage these days. They can be a great way for you to get your product, service, or opportunity in front of thousands of people. However, they can be time consuming and you can open yourself to a lot of unwanted attention from “professional” networkers.

Here are some tips to make the most of your online networking experience:

1. Be selective about the type of information you give about yourself
2. State your intentions right up front
3. Give in order to receive
4. Draw the line when it comes to time
5. Look the part

When you join an online networking group such as www.Ryze.com or www.DirectMatches.com (two sites I currently use), be selective about giving your contact information. A lot of people have all kinds of ways to be contacted these days…AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, email, phone, and too many to name. It’s not necessary to give all that information and you must realize that the more information you give, the more ways unscrupulous networkers have to load you up with unwanted information and SPAM. Unfortunately, there will always be those who take advantage of this kind of information so be prepared. Every networking group has its pros and cons.

If you are looking to make contacts to recruit for an opportunity, put that on your profile page. Have a product or service you know other business people can’t live without? Make sure they know where to go to view more information. Do you have multiple opportunities? OUCH! There is nothing worse than visiting someone’s profile page and seeing that they are pushing 20 different programs! Cull it down to your three top performers. Don’t over-load potential recruits or business partners with too much information. Start small and, once you have established a business relationship, slowly introduce other programs or products you think might benefit their specific needs.

Networking can be like finding a needle in a haystack
