This is a reply to “Losing Philadelphia: What’s happened to the city of Brotherly Love” by Eric Williams. First I mean no disrespect to Mr. Williams. I think it was a well thought out article, and I stand by his right to write what he believes. However I feel he is mistaken in some of his points.

A common problem with anti gun people is their refusal to understand what a criminal is. A criminal commits crimes, breaks laws ect. If guns are illegal then the criminals will still have them and the law abiding citizens won’t. It’s as simple as that.

Crime would go up. The police do their best but they can’t protect people all the time, they usually arrive to pick up the pieces after a crime happens. If a criminal knows he won’t meet with armed resistance he or she will commit more crimes.

People tend to want a nice quick solution to society’s problems. And misguided people think Gun bans would be that solution. Education, proper family life-values and employment are the keys to lowering crime rates, not gun control.

I think American society took a downward turn with the ending of a one income household. Years ago the father worked, the mother for the most part reared the children. They had time to address the kids and raise them in a proper way. There was always that strong parent figure there to help guide the kids. Now with the majority of households having both parents away from the home at work, kids suffer. Parents are tired from work and have less time to be directly involved in their kid’s lives. Thus the teaching of morals and other values suffers.

Education ties into employment. The better the education the better the jobs when the kids get to working age. The better job they have, I think the less likely it will be that they turn to crime. If you have a nice job, car, home, you’re less likely to be full of the despair that drives so many to drug problems.

Those countries probably never had the number of guns on the street that we have.

I'm really miffed at my SO, in a passionate rage I buy a gun and end his life and my own. Yes makes sense. Let's not require a waiting period or cooling off time. A show of hands please...How many of you have held a robber, mugger, rapist, or other individual with criminal intent at gunpoint while you wait for the police to arrive? Finally, the murder rate in the US steadily increased from 1960 to 1991 after which it has begun a steady decline. So I'm not sure your idea of both parents working makes much of a dfference and the tired reason concerning only criminals will have guns just doesn't hold water. Take a look at countries with gun laws and you'll see a small percentage of crime.
