What If Hillary Clinton Ran as a Third Party Candidate?

Gotterdammerung for the Democrats?

Since the recent primaries in North Carolina and Indiana, the punditry and much of the Democratic Party has been writing off Hillary Clinton. However, if all else fails, she has one option left to her to keep hope alive. That option is to run on a third party ticket.

Crazy? Impossible? Perhaps, but such a move would fit Hillary Clinton's personality.

The objection that running as a third party candidate would damage the Democratic Party would not impress Hillary Clinton. Neither Hillary nor for that matter Bill Clinton have been particularly loyal party people. For them the Democratic Party exists solely as a mechanism for their relentless, single minded pursuit of power. If the Democrats reject her as their nominee for President, the usefulness of the Democratic Party for that purpose would be at an end.

Hillary Clinton would also have the example of Teddy Roosevelt who, having failed to wrest the Republican nomination from Howard Taft, ran as a third party "Bull Moose" ticket in 1912. Roosevelt did not win the Presidency, but he ran second behind Woodrow Wilson, leaving the hapless Taft to run third. Roosevelt is still remembered as a great American statesman.

Hillary Clinton's enemies within the Democratic Party would point out that her running as a third party candidate would essentially ensure the election of John McCain. Hillary Clinton would reply, that it is possible, but so is running Barack Obama as a Democratic candidate. Hillary Clinton can point to polls that show that she runs better against McCain than does Obama. Obama only attracts "African Americans and egg heads," suggested Clinton advisor Paul Begala. If the Democrats choose Obama, an obvious loser as their candidate, then that is their look out.

John McCain's vacuous choice for Vice President leaves behind two poor major parties choices. We, the people, need a new 3rd party ticket: Hillary (for President) and Obama (for Vice President). Let the momentum begin!

The only way Barry wins is by turning the national election into a caucus. When voters get into a private voting booth racial prejudices take over. In the caucus system everyone can see how others vote. No one wants the appearance of bring a racist, especially if your minister, boss, black caucus members, or even husband is watching!

The House would decide the Pres. The Senate would decide VP.

Go ahead. Leave the Dem. Party and run. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. The most likely thing is that it would end up in the House with a Congress even more Democratic because of higher turnout.

I saw Arogant Obama, his supporters also DN party. I think they do not have any brain to treat Hillary very badly, unfairly. They bashed her all the time. They forgot? HRC carries 50% voters. DO NOT BE OBAMA'S VP, HILLARY. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU, WE HAS a PRIDE.

I like this idea, at least Hillary 's third party will carry 30%, it will make replublics or democrats not too powerful. She is fenomenal, a woman accross the fire. I will donate for you more than I did

I have been trying to persuade her to do - just this! This is the only way to save the democratic party from failure again. With the right running mate - she could make this happen. If she wins: NY, FL, OH, WV, KY, MI(maybe) Neither of the candidates would have enough votes to be president, justly splitting the states. Senate would then decide. OK. Got that. Next, She would have to win these states - SHE is strong in OHIO very strong. They would never vote for Obama. Never. I really beleive that OH, KY, WV, MI are what you would call Clinton States. There is a lot of "clinton democrats" in those states. They will not vote for Obama... either Clinton or McCain

Ah, maybe you people can get her elected and maybe she will get impeached for perjury. If only the Clintons did not have that power to keep their latest fraud trial from being reported by the press, maybe then citizens will wake up. Or they are in love with the chronic liars and corruption.

How in the world is she going to persuade registered Democrats to back her instead of Obama in the general election if she can't get the majority of them to back her in the primaries? For all of her arguments that she has more diverse support within the party, the fact that she is behind Obama in the vote count shows that the majority of voters don't see her as a viable alternative to Obama. The critical flaw in the comparison to Roosevelt and Taft is that candidates weren't chosen by primaries in 1912. Roosevelt saw that the candidate chosen by the party bosses, Taft, didn't have the support of the people. Not so with the 2008 Democratic primary campaign. (Before anyone brings up MIchigan and Florida, let me point out that because Obama removed himself from the ballot in Michigan following the party's decision to not acknowledge that state's primary, the results of the Michigan primary don't reflect which candidate -- Clinton or Obama -- the voters in that state really prefer.)

Good thoughts. My serious concern would be, this would split the democratic party even more. I am seriously telling you that if some kind of change doesn't occur with this election, no matter the party, this country is in serious trouble. Well written article.
