Holiday Gift Guide: Dirt Cheap (but Classy) Gift Ideas for Coworkers Under $5
The most dreaded part of the holiday season if often shopping for people whom you don’t really want to shop for but are, in a sense, obligate to. Coworkers often fall into this category.
For almost 10 years I was a bartender and every year we would exchange presents. I only had a few close coworkers that a really enjoyed buying a present for but was forced to get the others gifts just so they wouldn’t feel left out. The hardest part was
shopping for 7 people without looking like a cheap-skate. I never wanted to spend boatloads of money on people who I didn’t necessarily care for to begin with!
Here’s some great ideas of nice gifts that you can get for your coworkers that won’t break your bank.
1. Gift Certificates. Who couldn’t use a $5 gift certificate to Starbucks, McDonalds or Burger King? Gift Certificates are a great buy because $5 can get the person you give it to a full meal, or maybe even two smaller meals. Plus they can pick out exactly what they like. Everybody has to eat sometime so why not give the gift of food? If you decide to go with McDonald’s gift certificates they come in $1 amounts so you can buy several packs and divide them up as you feel is appropriate.
2. Candy Mug. This has got to be the cheapest thing but is always loved. Go to the dollar store and pick out matching mugs for everybody in the office. Buy a few bags of Christmas candy and some tissue paper. Stuff two pieces of tissue paper in the mug then load it up with candy. That way your coworker can keep it on their desk until the candy is gone then they have a mug for their coffee.
3. Customized Christmas Ornaments. This couldn’t be easier or more affordable. If you’re good with painting, buy non painted ornaments or bulbs from your local craft store and pick up some acrylic paint too. All it takes is some time and you’ll have an original, creative present that will last forever! Make sure you put the date on it somewhere!
