I am still trying to figure out what all the “hoopla” is about concerning Mel Gibson’s July 2006 DUI arrest. For one thing, I've always believed that Alcoholics Anonymous was created for the people in Hollywood. It seems that more meetings are filled with the rich and famous, than any other demographic. It’s quite likely that America is enraged with Mel Gibson because he’s dimply shining a flashlight on behavior that’s been in common practice for years. Associated Content producer Laura Neal Mooney sheds light on the topic with a detailed look at the Good Morning America interview conducted by Diane Sawyer.

As Gibson speaks of that fateful night, Neal Mooney emphasizes the fact the he avoids declaring his feelings towards Jews. But the question should be: Why does anyone care? To prove a point, it should be noted that several Jewish celebrities have changed their surnames in favor of more “glamorous” ones. Winona Horowitz just doesn’t have the same glitz as Winona “Ryder.” This is apparently a common practice, and has been for years. It may seem that only when the Jewish population is offended that it speaks loudly in defense of its heritage.

Personally, I don’t understand why Mel Gibson would ask his arresting office if he “was a Jew.” The officer’s cultural background should have no bearing over procedures following the acts of a law breaker. Mel’s rants that “Jews have started all the wars of the world” are not only glib, but totally irrelevant to his drunken arrest. If the bottom line is that inebriated people shouldn’t operate motor vehicles, then why is the world more concerned with Mel Gibson’s opinions than with the fact that he could have killed an innocent person on the open road?

Can you believe this guy made SO many people in Hollywood mad?

cont... Mel Gibson has enjoyed a huge career and has made a lot of money doing very little, compared to the average, working-class person. You'd think all that money would be worth simply keeping his big mouth shut. Or maybe (gasp!) he should just stop holding such hateful beliefs about people.

Absolutely wrong. This article makes no sense. What in the world do you mean? Why would BET want to know what Mel Gibson thinks of black people? He never made any comments about them. The reason he's being questioned about his feelings for Jews is because he himself mentioned Jews. Why don't you get that? The reason people are focusing on the racial slurs a bit more than the DUI is because a DUI is a mistake (hopefully isolated) that is a lapse in judgment. Racial slurs indicate a person's core belief system. Get it? You can punish a crime, but you can't punish away a belief system. Yes, as a celebrity, these things are exposed on a bigger level than the average person, but I believe it would happen to anyone. If your boss was a Jew and someone from work overheard you bashing Jews, it would be mighty uncomfortable for you. That's because no one likes the idea of working with someone who secretly hates them. Mel Gibson has enjoyed a huge career and has made a lot of money doing very lit
