What is it?
The Canon EF-S f/2.8 macro lens is a multi-purpose lens that specializes in macro photography. What is macro photography? Macro basically means that you can take photos of small objects within an inch or two from the camera lens. This allows you to make a small object look really big on your computer screen. A standard kit lens will not focus on an object that is closer than such and such length (like sixteen inches).
Should You Buy one?
If you're the type of photographer who loves to take pictures of small objects or creatures, then you should really consider purchasing this macro lens. With this lens, you can easily make that tiny flower as big as your computer screen. You can also take really amazing pictures of insects with this macro lens.
Taking pictures of tiny objects is not all that this camera lens can do. If you want to take landscape photos, portraits; etc then this macro lens will work for those as well. The only thing that you can't use this lens for is zooming.
There are some lenses that call themselves macro zoom lenses, but these lenses are not nearly as good at taking close up pictures. These macro zoom lenses tend to suffer from quality issues. You may very well be able to take a picture of an ant with a macro zoom lens, but the picture may look terrible on the screen (noise, artifacts; etc). So if you're concerned about quality then purchase the Canon EF-S f/2.8 macro lens, and buy a zoom lens separately. It may cost a bit more this way, but it's worth it if you're concerned about quality.
