Recently, a Connecticut teacher named Marie Jarry was featured on the Howard Stern Show during a segment called "Ugliest Man, Hottest Wife". Marie Jarry appeared on the show in a bikini and discussed taboo topics like her sex life with her husband.
United States of America Upon returning home, local news media began calling her home requesting comments. Jarry says that she felt like she was pressured to resign and therefore, quit her job as a second grade teacher. Howard Stern stood up for her on a later show, saying that he did not think she should have been pressured to resign because she was clothed and nothing inappropriate was said.
This is just another case of people having to pay the price for not keeping their personal lives private. I'm not saying whether or not I agree with her actions, but the whole dilemma could have been avoided if Jarry had not decided to show in a bikini. Therefore, to prevent future occurrences like this, here are five ways employees can help protect their careers by using common sense in public:
#1Don't do anything on television you wouldn't want your boss to see.
We've all seen people doing things on reality television that are funny in the moment, but then they have to pay for it later. A perfect example of this would be Pumpkin from Flavor of Love, the VH1 reality show. She did many things on the show, including spitting on another contestant, and now she can't find work. She tried to teach at a school but was fired because it caused too much of a distraction to students.
#2Don't say things to co-workers that you don't want circulated in the office.
This is an obvious piece of advice. We all know that people talk, so if you really need to blow off some steam about your work life, tell a close friend or family member.
#3Try to carry yourself in a respectable manner at all times.
You never know when someone is watching and if you decide to get drunk at a bar one night and a co-worker just happens to walk in, it could end up being the number one topic of discussion on Monday morning.
#4Try to stay away from wearing a bikini to earn extra cash.
