Here is some old wisdom on when to plant vegetables according to the trees and bushes. Seeing that tree's bloom according to the soil temperature, these old gardeners were on to something. Crops rely on good soil temperature to grow properly.-Plant Hardy Crops when the peach and plum trees are in full bloom.
-Plant Corn when the oak leaves are about the size of a mouse's ear.
-Plant Lettuce, Peas and other greens when the lilacs are in first leaf.
-Plant Beans and squash when the lilacs are in full bloom.
-Plant Perennials when the Maple trees are just coming into leaf.
-Plant Tomatoes and Peppers when the Apple Trees are in full bloom.
Of course the question is just how big is a mouse's ear? I don't think it's an exact science we are talking about here. Just watch the buds and as the leaves start to grow, its time to plant corn. Always be careful of possible frost! I cover my newly planted vegetables with a small plastic milk jug to act as a greenhouse to get them started and to keep them warm.
