Love in the Deepest of Pits

Wisdom from Corrie Ten Boom

One of my favorite movies came from the 1971 best-selling book The Hiding place by Corrie ten Boom. It is the story of her family's involvement in the Dutch Underground and subsequent imprisonment during Word War II.

Her dying sister, Betsie's. words inspired the book: "...[We] must tell them what we have learned here. We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that He is no deeper still. They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been
 there."

After months of suffering and imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps, Betsie and Corrie had seen God's love thrive in the most oppressive environment. In the dark, hate-filled German prison camps, they experienced God's love and shared the gospel with women whose hearts and bodies were wounded and dying.

God's unfailing love isn't just what He does; it is who He is! First John 4:7 tells us, "God is Love." That means every mention of love in the Bible describes God. Love is patient, kind, not self-seeking, not proud... God is all of those things and much more! This is only a glimmer of the depth of His love. God offers us this deep, abiding life each and every day, no matter where we are.

Psalm 48 is a song about God's glory. His people were meditating on His love because they saw it all around them. They remembered the great things God did for them because He loved them.

Today I must remember God's love for me. Though I may be walking through the darkest time of my life, "there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still."

Thank you a dozen times for reading and commenting. I was thinking after I submitted this of one particular part of the movie that sticks out to me. Remember when Corrie and her sister got head lice? I was thinking, "Yuck! Why didn't God protect them from THAT?" Well, thankfully, I am not God! He WAS protecting them against something much worse than head lice. -------- Because they were prisoners, and females, the guards used to rape them without impunity. BUT those who had head lice were LEFT ALONE!!! ----- Oh, thank You, Lord, for those head lice! --- Sometimes, when we don't see the plan of God, we don't understand that what looks like a curse is really a BLESSING in disguise! BIG BIG lesson learned from THAT part of the story!

It took me a long time to realize that lesson, April. Thanks for an awesome review and uplifting reminder.
