Back pain is one of the leading causes of hospitalization. Sometimes it can't be avoided, like an accident, but often the things we do daily put stress on the muscles that support our backs. Here are ten pretty simple ways to prevent lower back pain:

Putting a small pillow behind your lower back while sitting on the sofa will provide support. Sofa cushions weren't made for comfort, but for looks.

Crossing your legs while sitting causes the pelvis to twist and pulls on your lower back. Sit with both feet on the floor, or elevated on a footrest.

Use short strokes when vacuuming. This prevents over-extending your arm, causing shoulder or lower back muscles to strain.

If you just can't hang up the phone while cooking or doing other tasks that require both hands, get a headset for your phone. Cradling the phone between your shoulder and ear puts pressure on your neck and upper back.

Don't sleep on your stomach. This does not provide any support for your back. Lie on your side with your knees bent. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to relieve lower back strain.

A small pillow placed behind your back while driving will give the lower back support.

While doing tasks that require you to reach overhead, remember to take a break every 10-15 minutes to relieve the strain on your shoulders, neck, and back.

When lifting, be sure to bend your knees, hold the load close to your body, and use your legs to raise up. Bending over and lifting with your arms will create back strain.

While standing at the sink or counter, opening a cabinet underneath and propping one foot on the lowest shelf will help relieve pressure on that foot and leg. Change feet occasionally.
Drink plenty of water. If you become dehydrated, muscles may spasm more often.

If you suffer from lower back pain, trying just a few of these ideas may make a lot of difference.

Great tips. I can make use of these considering I get bad lower bag pain sometimes.

Excellent tips, Rebecca! My husband suffers from chronic back pain. I'll pass this article on to him.
