I was browsing through the articles on Associated Content, as I normally do on rainy days such as this, and I stumbled across the article, “Gays Are Taking Us To Hell.”  This article immediately grabbed my attention, which I suppose was the point, after reading the first several sentences, I knew that I would have an immense amount of emotion regarding this subject matter.  As I continued reading I saw someone who’s passion and desire for all to be accepted by the one religion that preaches acceptance was as strong as my own.

However, I have a slightly different spin on the subject matter.  The reason for this is that I have been born and literally raised in “church.”  I went to a Christian private school, and rarely missed and Sunday morning/night and Wednesday service.  I was the ideal “Christian” when it comes to attendance.  Which, now-a-days is what qualifies you as a true Christian.  However, in my latter teen years I began to notice something quite different - and that was the disownment of things that were different.  I have been taught love my entire life, however, it seemed that I was to only “love” those who weren’t incredibly strange, different, or those who didn’t go against the “law” that the Bible had set forth.  Although, my first instict was not to question this, I could not help but do so after several years.  Why was it that a religion that is based on acceptance not accepting everyone?  Why did all of the churchgoer’s have such a prideful and arrogant attitude, when clearly, that is not how they are “supposed” to act?

I'm a Christian, and a member or the religious left. I have nothing against those who are homosexual at all. I believe the Bible is God inspired, but yes, also written by men. Of course, then there are all the translation errors and copy errors. Those are all by men. It makes it a bit difficult then, doesn't it?

my church doesn't operate like the one you've been attending. I go to a contemporary christian church. A guest speaker came in and explained that his church in Tahoe has a member that is a bartender and has been feeding the homeless for 30 years. He said that the bartender has brought over 50 souls to Christ because of the people he meets in his line of work. No sense preaching to the choir.

There's a good point to a lot of this, but most of it is a whole lot of generalizations. There are Christians who act like this, and there are some who don't. I've defintely heard gluttony come up in sermons before. Our church even has a spiritual based weight loss program. So I don't relate. On top of that it only makes sense that your religious beliefs reflect all aspects of your life, including the way you look at other people. I don't see anything wrong with there being a standard for how Christians should appear in church. The make up thing is a bit too far, but what next? Allowing people to walk into church dressed like prostitutes or with profanity across their shirts? You've gotta draw the line SOMEWHERE. And you know what they say, if you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything ;) Believe it or not, you TOO have prejudices and imperfections. But I always find it amusing that people hold Christians to such higher standards.

Very nice article! The main reason to go to church is because you love God. In Psalms 122:1 [[A Song of degrees of David.]] "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD." David was a man after God's own heart. When we think of Church as God's house then we should want to visit shouldn't we? If it is a chore, something we are doing to earn "brownie points" with God then it is pointless. Yes, our relationship with God/Jesus Christ is more important than church attendance. If we make "church" and rules and regulations our God than we are obviously not putting Him first. I believe we have to let God be God and let Him do the convicting when pertaining to the conviction of sin. We, as Christians, are called to love. If we do not have love in our hearts then we need to question our relationship with Him. I'm sickened when I hear of those coming to Church to "find" Jesus that He is nowhere to be found, woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees! In Mark 9:

Thank you for speaking wise words to the masses. I have long struggled with similar issues, and while I hold to my faith, I still have to answer many concerned Christians several times a week as to why I choose to not attend church. When the solicited answer is given, it is met with statements like "why don't you pray about it?" and soforth. I appreciate your viewpoint, and would like to add: Christians have trouble accepting their "own" people as it is, and for many evangelicals, the act of thinking outside the heavy boundaries of what is acceptable for them to think (conservative, anti-gay, anti-abortion, ad infinitum) is beyond their current capacity. However, people like you and many others are bringing new life and hope to the actual cause of Christ in our time (the cause of love, acceptance, and life together). Thanks.
