Tornado Experiment

Kids are so curious about the weather and they especially seem to be interested in storms such as tornadoes, hurricanes and cyclones. A great science experiment to do with kids to show how tornadoes move is the tornado experiment, this is also a very popular science fair project.

The following information is the materials that are needed to make a tornado experiment and how to assemble the materials so that the tornado experiment is successful.

2 of the 2 liter plastic pop bottles
Food Coloring( I normally use blue but any color is fine)
Water
Electrical Tape
Scissors

Before starting to make the water tornado experiment, make sure the plastic bottles are washed out really well and that any outside labels are removed so that there is a nice clear view through the plastic.

Fill one of the bottles about ¾ full of water and add drops of food coloring until the desired intensity of color is achieved. Take the other plastic bottle and turn it upside down so that the mouths of the bottles are flush up against each other. Tape the mouths of the plastic bottles with the electrical tape so that no liquid is able to escape, you may need an extra set of hands with this portion of the tornado experiment assembly as it is very important to get the seal between the mouths as water tight as possible.

Now the fun begins, turn the bottles upside down back and forth so that the water moves from one bottle to another, as the water go into the bottle. It should give the swirling effect of a tornado and if so, you have just made a wonderful tornado bottle experiment for kids and adults alike!

We had to do this with our son, and it was great but a lot of work. We go to the extreme sometimes with his projects. Or should I say we just get into it. Great article.
