Gas prices are going to be a hot topic in the 2008 elections in West Virginia and around the nation. The average gas price in West Virginia is $3.776 a gallon for regular unleaded. The price has increased over $.70 a gallon from a year ago, over $.38 a gallon from last month and up over $.09 a gallon from last week according to westvirginiagasprices.com. The gas prices are expected to continue to rise with Memorial Day Weekend just a head and the popular summer travel months.

The high gas prices cause commuters like me to pay more to travel to my job. In the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia a great deal of West Virginians commute out of state to Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia everyday. In the Northern Panhandle many West Virginians commute to Pittsburgh. On of the largest industries in West Virginia is tourism. West Virginia has historic areas such as Harpers Ferry to visit. It has Ski resorts such as Snowshoe, Winterplace, Timberline and Canaan Valley to ski in the winter. West Virginia offers some of the best white water rafting on rivers such as the New, Cheat, and Potomac River. However, the higher gas prices are forcing more and more Americans to cut back on their travel and leisure activities. Therefore, West Virginians are being hit on an industry level and as consumers by the rising gas prices.

I found out my husband was filling my tank when I filled for a $50 shock--the last time I filled the price of gas was nearly a dollar less. Maybe we'll move into future transporation systems. :) Sheri

It's a tough situation that's been a long time coming. We *should* have been investigating/implementing alternative fuel options/vehicles years and years ago, so it's sort of hard to get on the candidates for not having short term relief ideas that are realistic. Good overview.

Good analysis. In my area we have limited public transportation. I quit driving so I walk or ride a bike everywhere. (You can bet your bottom that this won't hold up next winter, I don't like to walk when it's cold.) If every American neighborhood met neighbors and carpooled to the grocery or walked, or omitted a trip and shopped just once a week, took public transportation when possible, and corporations provided some centrally located group transportation and got tax breaks for offering it and offered bonuses to employees that carpooled we could reduce consumption. We need to reuse and conserve materials made from oil and change some of our habits. Why not a tune up day when the government sponsors in some manner a tune up for vehicles and check of tire pressure. This improves gas milage. Only a candidate that can come up with a workable plan and get Americans to work together should win.

The gas prices are horrible we are up to about $3.89 a gallon here is Illinois and the food prices are really getting out of hand. Very nice job on this article.
