Stepping up to the late model sedan, Officer Joe laughed to himself. The car that he pulled over was exactly like the one that his wife drove, and he could not help but see the humor. He had spent the last 20 years with the department and was looking forward to retirement with that beautiful wife and mother. He also was looking forward to getting to know his kids better not to mention his grandkids. How was it possible that he had six grandkids? He was only 18 five minutes ago it seemed.

Clearing his mind, he noticed that the tags were out of date and made a mental note to warn the driver to get it updated. Walking up to the car, he knocked on the driver's side window and asked to see a license and registration.

The driver lets the window down, pulls a gun and blows Officer Joe clear into traffic.

Officer Joe dies on that sad night there on that cold highway. He is run over by a car as his lifeless body is hurled into the lanes of traffic. His wife loses a husband, his kids a Dad, and his Grandkids a hero.

I apologize for my fictional story being so brutal, but it is very tame compared to the many murders of police officers across our Country every year. I wrote it to prove a point.

Many people consider police officers to be crooked, abusive, and power hungry. I have news for those people. They are right....sometimes. Every group of people have good and bad. It makes no matter how many or how few. There are always examples of poor humanity within a demographic. So, when those chosen few come on line and say that the police are this or that, they are showing their true character. Consider the following:

Officer Joe's family comes across this drivel on the Internet and hears people making horrible comments about policemen, with no regard to their Dad, Grandfather, or Husband. How do they feel? Do they not feel exactly the same way that any other group that is generalized might feel? Of course they do. Yet people continue to bash cops with the same broad strokes as always. I am talking to you Al Sharpton, among others.

Takeaways
  • Police brutality certainly exists but is it really that widespread?
  • How many cops have you thanked for protecting you each day?
  • What would you do if you were risking your life?

Al Sharpton is a community "misleader" that exploits the fears and furthers urban legends, while spinning tall & false tales. he does this to and among the very folks that he claims he wishes to help. He does this in order to go after the deep pockets of the govt agencies..that's his occupation..and the disenfranchised line up in droves bathing in the snake oil. That is evident by the deafening silence of so many of these community misleaders...when a private individual commits an egregious act, even murder, violating the civil rights of many...The Sharptons of the world are no where to be seen. Why? Because it is very hard to go after an individual...no deep pockets...unless of course the individual is rich. There is no sense of justice or equality to the Sharptons of the world..only their cut of the action..the sad thing is when an occasion does arise where there is a legitimate grievance...it's hard to believe..the ol' boy who cried wolf syndrome kicks in..shameful! Thanks again, Rod

Excellent article, Rodney! Thanks for such an objective point of view regarding this. I'm going to forward this to some of the guys. Not to many get a chance to read positive things about their profession. An overwhelming amount of good cops expect and even want scrutiny, they understand that internal affairs & quality assurance intiatives are a necessary evil..like you eloquently pointed out brother...there is bad in all groups..a fact of life. Thank you for acknowldging the majority of the members of the force in this country that just like our military enjoys having the best trained and restrained members of the service on the globe

This really puts a lot of thought into what our police officers have to go through everyday. The things that we may take for granted can be gone in an instance.

Rodney, thank you so very much for this. My Dad was a law officer. Even our family was outcasts as Kim mentions. (Who wants to be too friendly with or date a cops' kid?) You bring up a lot of memories for me. My father was proud to serve and protect. No one was angrier than he was when a crooked law officer betrayed those who needed him and served with him.

Thanks for the insight Kim. I agree that it is not a very agreeable profession if you are looking for kudos. I applaud them for doing a thankless job, and hope that those that are abusive of the position get theirs as well. I am certainly not excusing the bad cops with this article. Rather, I am trying to say that painting them all because of them is wrong in every way.
