Ton of emails circulate the Internet that offer hints, tips, suggestions, warnings, funny stuff, and information. Honestly, most of these emails are complete bunk, and you can often find out the truth to these myths, rumors, and information by visiting a site called Snopes.com.However, one interesting email that has wandered into my inbox several times was one about alternative uses for normal household products. There were many suggestions for things like Bounce Dryer sheets being used to repel mosquitoes or tossed into a dresser drawer for nice fragrance and freshness. One of the suggestions in particular caught my eye, and that was alternative uses for Dawn dishwashing detergent.
The reason this one stuck with me over the others was because of the recent commercials that Dawn dishwashing detergent has had on the air about how Dawn is used for wildlife organizations helping to clean oil from birds using this liquid soap. This made me recall something my vet once told me when my cocker spaniel, Dani, turned up allergic to flea dip and medication: Dawn dishwashing detergent is effective at killing fleas, and can be used on very young animals that are not yet old enough or large enough to use flea medication.
Then I was reminded of the old Palmolive commercials with Madge. Any of you remember these? "You're soaking in it..."
So these things caused me to scour the Internet for other uses for dishwashing detergent, and in this instance, Dawn dishwashing detergent in particular. Below is what I found:
1. Dawn Takes Grease Out of Your Way!
Yes, this is a commercial tagline, but it appears that this is pretty accurate. According to the International Bird Rescue Research Center, Dawn dishwashing detergent has effectively been used to clean wildlife birds who have been exposed to oil spills. Apparently, other dishwashing and liquid detergents were tried but they were either not effective or they caused irritation to the birds.
2. Dawn Dishwashing Detergent Kills Fleas
- Many household products have more than one use.
- Dishwashing detergent removes grease from dishes and other items too.
- Dawn is biodegradable where as other chemical solvents may not be.

I use dawn dish soap in place of laundry detergent and it actually works better and you don't need that much. I figured it out and it is cheaper than regular laundry soap. Try it sometime..its great!

I have used dawn since I was a teenager doing dishes at home. Never used anything else but today I wondered if anyone else missed the lasting bubbles that always made me feel dawn was still going strong. These days I am constantly pouring more and more into the water just to make sure its working because I don't see any bubbles. Stop messing with the formula and give us what we pay for- the one and only -truly Original Dawn!

Dawn is better than Botox. It makes your skin very tight and clean. It doesn't take but a dime in the palm of your hand. I was dealing with acne real back and decided to try it and in four days my face in very much clearer, cleaner and tighter.

My children and I all have sensitive skin. A small amount of original Dawn in the bathtub makes great bubble baths. Never had a problem with skin irritation. I keep a spray bottle in my laundry room Dawn and water, works great as a pretreater for stains. I LOVE ORIGINAL DAWN!!!!!

My dog recently got fleas when we took him to a wooded area for a walk. I went online to find safe and affordable ways to kill fleas. Using Dawn dish detergent was one of the suggestions which I tried. It worked. I also used borax on the carpeting. Both products are cheap and safe to use.

any dish soap, mixed with water will kill the box elder bugs! I lived in a house that the outer wall was covered in them! I mean it was like a sheet of bugs they were so thick, I kept throwing soapy water on what i could and if I could reach then I got a bottle that connects to a hose filled with soap & when I sprayed the water mixed with it got in the cracks & in about a month they were gone!

in using it to wash your cats I wouldn't do it more than once a week, you strip their skin of natural oils and if you apply a flea topical drop you have to wait a few days so the skin can produce oils, that's what helps the drops spread on the skin. I didn't wait & now my cat has fleas big time again, never ending battle! one sure way to know if you have fleas on your cat is while scratching the back if they do tounge lapping pretty sure you have them, it's a allergic reaction to the bites.

On Monday I got soup all over the front of a cashmere sweater. On Tuesday, while draining tuna fish, it shot all over the front of another cashmere sweater. Both said, "Dry Clean Only." I soaked each in cold water with a small squirt of Dawn and put them on a mesh drying rack. They are immaculate and look fabulous---no shrinkage or stretching out of shape. Fabulous!
