Outdoor Exercise Alternatives to Going to the Gym

Everyone needs to exercise and stay healthy. Unfortunately, going to the gym isn't an option for some. If you can't afford the gym, or there just isn't one close enough to your home, you may want to try the following outdoor activities. They will get your heart pumping, and are a lot of fun to boot.

One of the best exercises you can do outdoors is hiking. You will not only build your leg muscles and gain more strength, but will also increase your cardiovascular health. Hiking works different muscle groups than a treadmill, because you are not walking on a solid flat surface. It can even help improve your balance over time. Going up hills during hikes will get your heart rate up and help burn more fat. Remember to take hiking poles along to help steady you and prevent accidents.

Another great outdoor activity that offers great exercise potential is playing frisbee. Running and jumping to catch the frisbee will use muscles you may have forgotten you have! There are even frisbee clubs with tournaments you can join. Don't forget your furry friends either. Dogs love to play frisbee and will benefit from the exercise just like you.

You could also take up biking. There are many trails that offer not only a place to ride your bike, but also a way to enjoy nature's beauty. Biking is a great exercise for the legs and lungs. You will strengthen your calf and thigh muscles considerably by biking, and as you work up in speed, you will improve your cardiovascular system.

A great American past time that will keep you fit and healthy is swimming. Not only is swimming fun but you will get a full body workout from this activity. This is a great exercise for the whole family.

If you don't know how to swim, or just want to vary your workout, do water aerobics. You can do leg lifts, knee bends, and squats for your legs. For an upper body workout there are water weights you can buy and do bicep curls, butterflies, and work your triceps. Be careful not to overdo it as you can't always tell how much of a workout you are getting when in the water, because of buoyancy.
