PS I Love you can only be described as the female's pornography. Porn for women. The type of flick that get's a lady all hot and excited. Oh, sure, it will not sexually arouse, but it has got to be the female version of porn. Fantasy to put it more frankly. The flick entails the life of relationship between a plain-looking hysterical woman to an easy-going Irish hunk who wants a child. First of all, women are definitely more inclined to want to procreate, thus the concept of a man desperately wanting a child is probably something to add onto the list of fantasies for women.
But I digress...
The movie starts with the two characters fighting over fiscal responsibilities and child-bearing desires. It's a scene that sets up the character's personas and climaxes at a walk-out by the husband. Except the husband immediately steps back into the apartment and the two are hugging and kissing and apologizing relentlessly. Romantic I suppose, if not completely random. Another item to check off on the list of female fantasy.
Sadly the husband dies leaving the lonely wife heartbroken. Tragedy, the greatest evidence of love. Subconsciously I think this is also on the fantasy list. In any case, there is more that blossoms from the tragedy. The protagonist receives a series of letters that the husband specified to be sent on specific dates after his death. How romantic, wooing beyond the grave.
Definite evidence of love. And I do believe the romance is also something on the list. The idea of a man not only spending time, but nearly his last breaths whipping up a sort of scavenger hunt that portrays their love and ambitions. These events entail buying something pretty to put on (something else to add to the list), doing a little karaoke, vacationing in Ireland where she finds another Irish hunk to sleep with, grasping inspiration for a dream-job, and being released of any guilt for falling in love again.
There is nothing in this flick that isn't dedicated to gratifying a woman's fantasy. Sure, there's a death, which is not portrayed in graphic detail by any means, but that death is simply a tool designed to invoke the list of romantic adventures.
