Once upon a time in an article far far away in my backlog I wrote an article about movie franchises that needed to end. Since then some of those movies have gone on to have sequels. Since Hollywood has denied to listen to me maybe I will fair better with the video game industry (probably not). These are five video game franchises that need to end.

Video Game Franchises that Need to End: Tomb Raider
There are some ideas that can go on forever. There will always be video games about alien invasion. When I'm 83 years old and on my death bed somebody somewhere will release another video game about World War II. These are the categories of genres that will never get old. Archeology digs? Not so much.

Lara Croft was the first huge female video game character to come along since Samus revealed she was a female in the NES days. She was the female Indiana Jones, but it's over. Tomb Raider is no longer a new idea. Babes in video games is no longer a new concept and the Tomb Raider movies sure didn't help the franchise.

Video Game Franchises that Need to End: WWE Smackdown!
I used to be a die hard wrestling fan but have stopped watching due to the ridiculous storylines. I still enjoy the actual wrestling though so I pick up the Smackdown game every year to be able to execute a nice Shining Wizard to somebody's head or lock somebody in the Sharpshooter but every year the game is the same.

Somebody needs to inform THQ and WWE that most of the time what sports games do is get better each year and by get better I don't mean this year we have ladders in our matches! This year you can wrestle for Raw, Smackdown and ECW! I mean real changes. At the very least you can expect updated roster changes in other sports games but since the WWE roster is getting worse each year this isn't a plus for them.

Fighting games, Shooting games, RPG, Sports, Racing, Platform, Strategy/Tactic, Online, First Person Shooter, Action, Rhythm, Party, Collection, Crossover, Beat 'em Up, Arcade, Survival Horror, Game based from movies, Education, Innovation, Career, and many more in between. Man, do the videogame world had tons of videogame genres and yet you want to get rid of the ones that defines any of those genre? is it boring to play successful franchise like World of WarCraft, Final Fantasy, Mega Man, Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Tomb Raider, and Street Fighter than craps like Bullet Witch, Haze, Genji, Pit Fighter, War Gods, etc. It's good that successful franchises are growing and new ones are coming but having original one are rare to come by.

Thought I was the only one who noticed THQ was turning into EA Sports.. Sonic has not been bastardized in the same sense that Mega Man has. Capcom took what Nintendo did with Pokemon and ran with it. You don't see Sonic games spammed like the Blue Bomber is. Any all Fighting series that are currently active should be stopped...The lesser known games like Plasma Sword, Darkstalkers and Fighting Vipers should be revived though.

Mega Man has been bastardized as has Sonic. They focused on profit over quality and now they're both horrible. But if you don't like fighting games I suggest you try the Soul Calibur series...incredibly fun games even if you're a so-called n00b

I agree! Another franchise that needs to end are the quickly churned out games that follow popular animated movies that all the kids gobble up, play all the way through in about a week, and then toss aside. there goes the $50 game. At least manufacturers should take the time to make they games somewhat challenging!

If they're a cash cow then they will keep pumping them out.

Continue: Mega Man hasn't even debuted in the new consoles anyways, so it's kinda dying. Whereas Mario on the other hand: is milking so much more. If any franchise needs to stop, in my opinion, it would have to be Mario Party. It's just a whole bunch of mini games and they are all pretty much the same between the original mario party and all the other mario parties.

What are you talking about man? Tomb Raider games aren't over-done. There's only 1 of its kind on the next gen consoles (Uncharted) and it's touted as the best game on PS3 by many. Tomb Raider games don't need to go, they need to be good. Sonic DEFINITELY does not need to go. There is only like a few good Sonic games anyways. They need to reinvent that franchise like they are attempting to do with the new one. They need to go back to what made it fun and just try to make it funner. There simply is not enough good Sonic games. And Fighting games? You don't know the difference between SF and MK? If you played it, you'd know the difference. Also, fighting games will never go because people love competitive action. Asking for a whole genre to go is just idiotic, that's like saying FPS needs to go because there's too much of it. Here's why Mega Man has so many games. It's because it's good. It's like Mario on crack and a lot harder and a lot more depth. Mega Man hasn't even debuted in the n

I would have to agree with you on your selection. Not that I have played them, but they are worn out concepts. I still enjoy replaying my entire series of Myst games all the way through the last one they ever made. Personally, those don't get old for those like me who like these sort of games. Heck! I even like Schizm: Mysterious Journey. I got hooked on this style of game when I bought The Messenger years ago. UbiSoft and Dreamcatcher have made many other genre of games, but these are more to my liking. I tried Tomb Raider and did not like it. It was more for those who like Nintendo or Sony style games.
