Do you ever lament that Halloween just isn’t what it used to be? Remember the old fashioned fun we had as kids before people were afraid of poison in children’s candy? The harmless pranks and the colorful, inventive costumes? Do you wish there were some way to get back that feeling? Well, you obviously haven’t been to Scare on the Square in downtown Enid!

Each year, for the past 3 years, people in Enid, Oklahoma have come to enjoy the annual Scare on the Square Halloween Parade - an evening of fun, candy and contests topped off with an after dark parade. This year is set to be even bigger and better on Saturday, October 28th starting at 3:00 pm and going until well after dark.

As usual, the Scare on the Square will host free food, candy, and fun for kids of all ages. Booths range from free food such as chili, hot dogs, and caramel apples to non-profit groups such as the local Boy Scouts of American chapter raising money by selling popcorn or other great treats. There are also vendor booths available where people give out free candy and offer their wares for purchase so don’t forget to bring some money and support Enid’s local businesses.

And did I mention the free candy? One stipulation for having a booth at Scare on the Square is that candy flows freely to each and every trick or treater! It’s a safe, fun way to celebrate Halloween and, every year, thousands of people attend making it one of the largest celebrations in the area.

The local fire department, police department, and sheriff's department get involved every year and, last year, the mayor presented an Oklahoma celebrity, Count Gregore, with the Skeleton Key to the City of Enid.

If you are looking for even more fun, I suggest you enter the Coffin Races! New this year, the Coffin Races allow anything on wheels that one person can ride and one person pushes to be entered for prizes in a zany race to the finish line. So if you like to have fun and have a competitive spirit, this is the perfect project for you.

A creative float haunts the spook-tacular after-dark parade during the 2005 Scare on the Square parade.
