After reading the article Why You Should Watch Dr Phil, I just had to comment.  First of all, Dom Coccaro says that he’s 22 and mentions that he is one of the few people his age that watches Dr Phil. I think it’s perfect that I’m 23 and can give my feelings on why you shouldn’t watch Dr Phil.  I have actually watched a complete episode and honestly wanted to puke afterwards.  Now, I’m not saying there are any other talk show hosts that are any better, especially not Jerry Springer and that garbage that he calls a talk show, but if your significant other slept with your sister, would just want to hug them and make everything okay with your sister?  Heck no, but this does seem to be what Dr Phil believes.

I noticed in Mr. Coccaro’s article, he says that Dr Phil deals with these issues by using common sense.  This is another reason you shouldn’t be watching Dr Phil.  These people who go on Dr Phil’s show obviously have no common sense and if that is all their problems require why do they need a “doctor”?  Honestly can these people not fix their problems on their own?  If you were having a serious problem with your mother and every time you got around each other you fought, would you want to have some guy looking at you and telling you to talk and work it out and worse than that, hug?  Is Dr Phil honestly going to be able to fix problems in less than an hour?  No.  I often have to think that most of the people who go on these shows really have no problems at all and are probably getting paid a handsome sum to come on there and act like complete morons and be “healed” by Dr Phil.  Why do people feel that they need to go on national television and air their dirty laundry, other than being paid?  I just cannot believe that Dr Phil changes their lives in such a ground breaking way.  We are lead to believe that these people are completely healed, in what, a matter of about 20 minutes?  Dr Phil isn’t performing miracles; he’s simply made to look good.

Takeaways
  • You cannot fix all of your problems by hugging.
  • Don't take your problems on television.
  • Dr Phil cannot possibly heal people's problems in 20 minutes.
Did You Know?
Dr Phil is the same show as Jerry Spinger without the violence and nudity.

I used to think Dr. Phil was a quality show because he had been on Oprah, but from the commercials I see for this show, it seems like a trashy show that I have no interest in watching.

I used to watch Dr. Phil when it first came out. He was helping people with real problems like disobedient children and he had great suggestions. But by the 3rd year the only people he talks to are scum of the earth people, who certainly shouldn't have national air time. I wish he'd clean up his act because he used to be good and helpful to watch

Dr.Phil is a criminal. He started a business in the early 1970s in Wichita Falls,Texas with a man named Harry Brace. The name of the business was Harry Brace Roman Health Spa. After getting thousands od dollars from hundreds of people they split the money and left town leaving the victims holding the bag. A friend of his is going around the web printng cover stories and saying this isn't true. It was covered by the local tv news stations and is in the archives of the local newspaper. There is alos a record carved in stone at the Jude Advocate General's office when I at the time was an airman at Sheppard AFB and had to get the military lawyers to step in and settle my account there. Seems the good doctor and Harry Brace had gotten many young airmen under the age of 21 to sign a contract which was illegal in the state of Texas. This man and his little folowing of sheep like people are disgusting.

It's fine that some people don't like the Dr. Phil show but most of what has been said in this thread against him and the show is just plain foolish. I mean you guys are basically looking at it blindly the main reason people go on the show in the first place is to get professional help and of course they choose to so no one can blame Phil for that. Also it is true that most of the techniques he uses to help people are common sense people just prefer to hear it from a professional like Dr. Phil to believe it's true. I agree that there really isn't any point to the show because all the problems that they show are so easily repairable but the problem is people are ignorant. And please if you're gonna say that your tired of seeing him do his hugging bs techniques on people at least explain the perspective fully before making him sound like Barney!

I watch Dr. Phil quite frequently and I have never seen him EVER tell someone to hug. I don't know where you got all this crap in your article. If you're going to write an article about Dr. Phil at least get your facts straight. Watching one episode doesn't make you an expert on the show.

Absolutely right Amy. I'm a little skeptical of all shrinks, especially; Phil. It's alarming to me that over 75% of our young people are majoring in physchology suddenly. Just where do they think they are all going to work? They'd better hope the remaining 25% are all dysfuntional.Where will the real doctors and engineers come from? All the hocus pocus Phil whoodoo reminds me of John Edward guy, another carni that talks to dead people, or; tricks people into thinking he can. I'm amazed at the following sideshow Phil has now. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Hi, I know I'm late on this, but I feel that something was left out. Not only is Dr. Phil a quack and a BS artist, he is actively harming people by making them feel small and stupid on national television. For some reason, he seems to be a favorite among religious conservatives, but his actions and words are not what Jesus taught. I'm sick of this sort of bogus southern Christianity that says, "What the heck is wrong with you that you can't get your pitiful life straight?" Only Jesus could heal somebody in 20 minutes, and He never did it by being cruel. Dr. Phil, please remember that you'll stand before God one day.

Finally, you said all what I feel about Dr. Phil. He is the biggest pot of bluff in my opinion. Branching out from Oprah, he really has no solution for anything.

One thing we can be sure of is that he's a quack and a liar for his diet campaign. But I don't think these people are paid. There are plenty of pathetic idiot moms that can be like that. What's totally rediculus is the fact that he really doesn't do anything! The majority of his interviews are as follows: Phil: Now Mary, what is your problem? Mary: I- I just want to kill every one. Phil: Do you believe that this is a problem, Mary? Mary: Ye- Yes, I do. Phil: Now Mr. Other Phychologyst, do you think Mary has a problem? Mr. Other Psychologyst: Definitely, but we can help her. Soccer mom audience: Cheers, applause Phil: Ok now Mary, I'm going to put you with Mr. Other Psychologyst so he can help you. Our next guest!... And then they'll probably be back on there again later for more treatment because nothing doesn't work.

Thanks Courtney! I just get so tired of that, "Let's all hug" thing. It just makes me sick LOL And the topics are just like Springer, as you said.

Thank you for this! I totally agree. I actually liked his books when they first came out, but his show has turned into alternating Springer like guests and "aren't Robin and I so great!" segments.
