The words in "sickness and health" ring through my brain; along with "if you set it free it will come back." It has been seventeen years of a whirlwind marriage. I cannot keep up with Sam's illness. He will not take medication, which could help; he will not seek professional counseling, which could help. Sam's mental illness is called manic depression. Sam is either depressed or in what is called a manic high. It is cyclic disease. So for seventeen years we have lived with a reoccurring manic high that has left our relationship and entire family devastated, emotionally and financially.

From the story, it sounded as if Sam did not hold up his end of the commitment part to you. You were the one who tried to adapt and did to his whims; yet, he would not even stay on the medication for the sake of his family. Yes, I am sure he had mental issues and that caused much of it; however, he sounds very selfish. He should have taken the medication and sacrificed a little more for his family. Sure, no one WANTS to take meds for depression but many of us do so out of respect for our partners. I suffer from depression--have for years. I don't like taking medication but I do it for the sake of my marriage. I commend you for writing about this. Five stars for sharing this difficult tale with us.
