Each year, many women will suffer through the symptoms of ovarian cancer without prompt and proper diagnosis. With ovarian cancer, many women suffer not only physical but significant emotional detriment. As a loved one of an ovarian cancer patient, understanding the staging classification of ovarian cancer, the emotional impact and the methods for optimal support, will provide the ovarian cancer patient with a more relaxed treatment.
Ovarian cancer is a condition which most often affects women after menopause. Most common in women who have never had children or may have had children later in life, ovarian cancer can strike anyone women at any age. For some women, however, various medications and lifestyle choices may attribute to an increase in the risk factors associated with acquiring ovarian cancer. Such lifestyle choices may include alcohol consumption, obesity and hormone replacement therapy. However, in most cases, research has shown ovarian cancer is primarily attributed to a genetic or inherited factor.
Caring for a loved one with ovarian cancer begins with understanding the stage in which the ovarian cancer has progressed. In ovarian cancer patients, staging of the disease is generally completed at the time of surgery and will include a variety of representative coding processes based on the status of the ovary conditons. As an individual offering support to a loved one suffering from ovarian cancer, it is important to understand the coorelation between staging and the relationship to treatment. For example, T1-T3 staging implies the level to which symptoms varied and to what extent the cancer has spread through the ovaries and abdominal wall lining.
