David Cook burned up the stage on last night's American Idol. It was a night of threes: three judges, contestants, three songs, but only one clear leader. David Cook edged out David A. last night, and the two will undoubtedly go head-to-head in the American Idol finale. After last night, Simon and I agree that David Cook won the night.

David Cook: "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"

David Cook's first song was picked by Simon. In the judge's choice round, David Cook took Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and made it his own. Simon chose that song for David Cook because wanted to give him "something different." Simon was trying to help David Cook showcase his originality by giving him a song that was sung by a woman, and is not in the typical David Cook rock genre.

With Roberta Flacks' "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," David Cook showed that he was up to the challenge of the "very, very tough" song Simon picked for him. The song started slow and slowly built up to a big finish during round one of the final three on American Idol.

Randy wanted to hear more of David Cook the rocker, but also said that he has been a "David Cook fan since day one." Paula Abdul, looking bright-eyed and refreshed, told David Cook on American Idol that Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was one of her favorite songs and he is her "second favorite person who sings it."

Simon told David Cook he thought it was one of David Cook's best performances on American Idol. Simon rightly pointed out that David Cook's ability to pull off a song outside of his comfort zone and usual genre makes him an original.

It is his ability to take risks, and succeed, that solidify David Cook's spot as the front-runner.

David Cook brought out the sentiment in the song, without making it sound sappy, and he was able to showcase his originality. Mission accomplished, Simon.

David Cook: "Dare You to Move"

David Cook's second song on American Idol was "Dare You to Move" by Switchfoot. This David Cook's choice of songs. He picked it because he thought that lyrically it the whole American Idol experience, he said.

David C. was terrible last night. What are you people listening to, he was totally off key and I just can't stand looking at his face any more.

I don't think last night was his best over all but I would buy his rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" tomorrow if it were available.

David Cook was great last night and to me, is clearly the winner if things do not change. His first song was classic to me. Great article.
