Introduction

In 1981 Dr. Paul Averback reported positive findings in schizophrenia. "... the Nissl substance may not be recognizable in the extreme examples." Averback found "fragmented cellular remnants". He reported "massive distention". "Masses of monomorphic lipid droplet vacuoles" were seen.

Basal Ganglia

The nucleus of the ansae peduncularis is a region of the substantia innominata. The substantia innominata is a group of masses of gray matter. This group is part of the basal ganglia, which consists of cellular masses high in dopamine.

Averback reported positive findings in the NAP (nucleus ansae peduncularis) and the septal areas. The septum is close to the substantia innominata. Both are subcortical (below the cortex).

Fat Droplet Vacuolar Material

It is not completely clear why the lipid droplets exist in schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington's chorea. They appear to be a biological marker for neuropsychiatric disease.

Buscaino

V.M. Buscaino came after Golgi. Golgi got the Nobel Prize for his drawing of microscopic structures published in his book. Buscaino did not write a book, but he wrote almost countless brilliant scientific papers on schizophrenia. Unfortunately he was unable to come up with a cure for it.

Vito died unfortunately, but his son is carrying his work. This also true of the American Linus Pauling. Linus Pauling Jr. is carrying on his father's work.

The Etiopathogenesis of Schizophrenia

Orlovskaya and co-workers discovered a factor in the blood of schizophrenics which had various effects on rabbits. Serum from schizophrenics was injected into rabbits. The blood glucose of the rabbits went up, presumably due to the toxic protein factor. The unknown factor appears to be causing a kind of diabetic state which may not be the same as the usual diabetes. It appears to inhibit glycolysis.
