It's about time for High School Seniors to graduate and to head off to college. May is the time for graduation parties, gifts, lots of money, and a time of excitement. What should you get your graduate? One of the most popular items to get a graduating student is a laptop, which they may or may not need. But this is a list for gifts your future college student could benefit from.

Books

There are many books out there for college students, but there are two books that I believe every college student should read: How to Win at College and How to Become a Straight-A Student both by Cal Newport. As a student, the knowledge of Cal Newport has greatly improved my study skills. The books will help with time management, research, diet and exercise, writing papers, and much more.

You can also give your student a book related to their major. Give them a book by one of the top gurus in their field. The book will be an inspiration and begin to teach your student about the field they are pursuing.

Website/Blog

I am a student blogger, and recently in student blogosphere there has been discussion of the benefits of blogging for a student. A blog allows a student to write about what they are learning, and gives them the opportunity to get their name out on internet. Blogging allows networking and can open up many job opportunities. A student who takes their blog seriously should be encouraged to mention their blog on their resumes. Buy your graduating student a year of hosting and give them $10 to get a domain name of their choosing.

Ergonomically Correct Chair

Your student may spend hours at their computer every day. Buy your student a nice chair. I have found that when I am sitting in an ergonomic chair I have longer attention spans while writing, I am more focused during the attention spans, I don't get tired of sitting at the computer, and in the long run I will maintain a healthy body.
