His wife cautioned him of the dangers of moving to a new country where they were not welcome, but felt he knew what was best for them. All he wanted was his own place to live and make a better life for his kids than what he had as a child.
He knew that the government of his new country sometimes welcomed immigrants and sometimes did not. He felt though that if he showed his loyalty he would be able to stay. He and his family tried very hard to learn the new language and to fit in, in their new home.
A year or so passes and rumor of war come to the family. The man is torn he hasn’t always felt welcome here but he did have a good life and he worked hard. Perhaps that WAS worth fighting for. The recruiter for the army seemed like he would be more than welcome there. After long consideration he decided that he would help defend his new Country and his job in the fields could wait on him to come back. It would be hard on his wife and children but the boys were old enough now to help out at home.
As the man saddled his horse and looked over his farm, his wife asked him. “John Do you know yet where you will be fighting”? He looked over at her “Yes Elizabeth, There are not many of us yet, and we will be stationed at an old church. We have been promised lot’s of reinforcements before Santa Anna can get to The Alamo”
In case some of you did not know. The Mexican government once had a big problem with Americans sneaking across their border to try to better themselves. Immigration problems will always occur when one country has it better than the one next door
