John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama today. While his was thought of as a "key endorsement" and while the announcement certainly does blunt the Hillary Clinton big win in West Virginia from one day previous, it is not as significant as all that. In fact, all of this noise seems secondary to the much larger point about the success of Barack Obama that many politicians and pundits seem to not be saying.

Because it's not like this is any huge secret or anything. They don't really talk about the forces at play in this primary, or when they do talk about it, it is as a secondary matter to all the blather about "change" and "new direction" and "hope" and such.

It is not as though a Hillary Clinton presidency would be somehow less monumental or ground breaking than a presidency for Barack Obama. In fact, some would argue that it would go even further in leveling the playing field. Barack Obama is a man; Hillary Clinton is a woman "in a pantsuit" (her own words) so the fact that Washington is full of fat cat old men and that a woman has the chance to be president is a pretty big deal.

But even though Barack Obama is a great orator and an inspirational individual who is trying to shake things up and make change a reality for people in the United States, that is not the real reason for his success.

It would seem that Hillary Clinton had done everything she was supposed to and that she should just walk down the isle straight into the chair in the Oval Office. But there is the one problem that Hillary has which is the catalyst to the success of Obama and is the thing that no one really says.

Bill.

Obama's people were far more Internet savvy, attracting a wealth of volunteers, supporters, and financial resources. I believe Clinton's portrayal by many in the media was frequently very sexist as well. I enjoyed your article Jesse.
