Today millions of people are questioning the Government of China. What are they asking, "Why did they not use the natural signs and animal behavior to predict the most recent earthquake?" Countries have tried to use changes in our natural world and animal behavior to predict weather and have enlisted animals to even detect various diseases.

It is reported on Comcast.net News that approximately 3 weeks before this recent quake the water levels in a pond in Enshi City all but disappeared, toads by the thousands wandered in the streets in Mianzhu and, the zoo animals reacted strangely on the day of the disaster.

The method of using natural and animal signs as predictions has been used and actually effective in several earthquakes in the country of China in the past. One ask now why did they not then evacuate and move people.

This is not an exact science however, no one actually knows how animals detect these things. Perhaps it is movement in the ground that is not detectible by humans and the animals heightened sense of touch and smell assists them in this area. Tests indicate that a dog hears between 67 and 47,000 HZ (Hertz), Their sense of smell is 1 thousand times stronger than a human. Their sense of feel is not recorded but, if you watch a dog you can see that they feel vibrations that you cannot feel.

No matter an animals ability, the difficulty would lie in what signs to watch for and how to read them. It is reported that the animals in the zoo beat their heads against doors to their cages and that elephants swung their trunks wildly. This behavior can be witnessed under many different circumstances in a zoo or captive setting with many different kinds of animals. Government officials would surely hesitate to ring the bell of danger strictly by the movements and activities of the animals in the local zoo. You must however, look at the water levels changing as a sign of some impending disaster. Perhaps the time span from the beginning of this lowering and the actual event was not long enough for them to analyze. This is something we may never know.

Did You Know?
China used animal behavior as a guideline to evacuate Haichen in 1975 before the 7.3 earthquake.

Great read, I know before the earthquake in the US my dog would not stop barking and when we felt it we were amazed.

I've heard that animals - particularly dogs - seem to have a sense when it comes to earthquakes and the like. It's similiar to the phenomenon that involves pets knowing when their masters are going to have strokes, etc..

Interesting article. I think animals have a much higher sense then we give them credit for.

Very interesting, I remember watching a program on how animals can predict natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcano eruptions.

I guess. That should have been a legitimate way to predict problems, but with China, even if they knew, they would have kept it a secret..................

Animals know so much and teach us so much. We should "listen" to their messages. (This from someone who shares a home with two cats and a parrot, and spends most of his time listening... and obeying.)

fascinating! sometimes animals just have natural intuition that we humans are too rational to possess.

I absolutely believe in animals as predictors of natural disasters. Even a deaf cat we once had was able to predict a tornado. Just before it hit, she acted like she'd never done before, fur rising up,, hissing and making a strange yowling noise. We made a beeline for the crawl space - just in time!

I could not agree more: "it would behoove the governments to research this as a method of assisting in saving lives during a natural disaster." I don't believe that all theories need to become "proven science" before we start paying attention. Human being would be extinct if the caveman had waited for "proven science". This topic has always caught my interest. Great topic. Great article.

Well, our horses sure were spunky before the Midwest US earthquake a few weeks ago . . . . but then, the mares were in season, and the geldings and stallions were a bit restless, as a result . . .
