Depression comes in many shapes and sizes and does not discriminate between gender or race.  Learning what can cause depression can be one effective tool in learning to deal with the illness.  Most cases of depression are caused by a stessor on the body such as an unforseen illness, stress at work, stress at home, or small incidents that an individual cannot effectively deal with.  Depression is also hereditary and has been proven most likely to be inherited with depressive disorders related to Bipolar-Manic Depressive disorder.  Numerous studies show that the genetic makeup of the brain differs in individuals suffering from Bipolar Disorder and similair links can be found between two unrelated persons with the same disorder.  Individuals not suffering from BP(Bipolar Disorder) do not show the same chemical makeup in the brain as those that do suffer from the disorder.

There is hope for individuals suffering from Depression and stress. Some treatments can include medication but may often be treated without medication through alternative methods. Some suggestions are provided below.

1. Exercise- If you are a healthy individual and can perform the basic functions of an exercise program this is my number one choice for overcoming depression. Some cases of depression can be linked to low self esteem related to body image. Not only can exercise be a mood enhancer because of the endorphins that are released during exercise, but the feeling of accomplishment after a workout is a great adrenaline rush.

2. Get creative- If you are feeling down write a poem, or a song, or just write in a journal. Sometimes people tend to hold things in instead of letting their emotions  out.

3. Find a buddy- Find someone you can trust and talk to them. Maybe they can identify what you are going through. Talking is a very effective way to deal with depression. Sometimes just carrying a burden alone can be too much.

4. Take a walk- Go outdoors. Enjoy the scenery. Find the beauty in what surrounds you. Run if you feel like it. You might be surprised how fresh air can be exhilarating.
