Last night on American Idol, we saw top three contestant Syesha Mercado get voted off the show. Was it the right decision? Did America get the last two finalists David Cook and David Archuleta right?

Yes. Syesha Mercado is a wonderful singer. She can belt out a tune and hold her own. However, her three performances on Idol Tuesday night were less than stellar. She first sang "Hit Me Up," All three judges agreed it wasn't the best she could do. Another song was "If I Ain't Got You" made popular by Grammy winner Alicia Keys. Mercado loved singing the song because Keys is one of her favorite artists. What she hasn't learned from the show is that just because you love a song or an artist, doesn't mean you will do the song justice. I wasn't blown away by any three of her performances, particularly this one as I am a fan of Alicia and it was very karaoke-like for me.

However, the judges thought she did. She got some positive remarks from the judges on the song, but in my opinion failed to make it "her own."

She also sang "Fever." I believe this is the song where she blew it for the finale. Though she gave a good vocal performance, nothing was special about it. Paula said "I'm not sure that it shows me who Syesha is as an artist" while Simon went on to say "I think you will probably regret that decision." The performance was quite cabaret and a bit over the top in dramatics.

Her performances weren't bad. However they weren't good enough to make her stand out on her own other than just an entertainer on a TV show.

The remaining two boys, the two Davids, will be going on to the finale next week. America got it right this time not based only on the "look" but also the sound. In previous years, we've had some weak singers up against one another. This season however could be a close call as both have the vocal strength, youth and appeal to a mass crowd.

The two boys out of the top ten finalists could be an easy market for RCA Records. David Archuleta is a 17 year old heart throb for teens who can croon his way into their hearts. He's got a soft yet strong voice and has been noted to be able "to sing the telephone book and it would be good."
