A number of student athletes will testify to the importance of playing on select teams as a means of advancing one's skills. Whether it be volleyball, basketball, or hockey, a number of the athletes that have distinguished themselves this fall have select team play in their background. In North Texas, a number of select leagues and teams not only improve the talents of local players, they give colleges and scouts exposure to some prospective athletes.
McKinney North's Allie Dora is just such an athlete. Select play helped her find which sport was her best. "I've played all kinds of sports. I played select soccer in middle school. I later dropped that and went into select basketball and was on a team that went to nationals and finished second. When I joined select basketball, I really got into it, I played with a lot of older girls, and they really taught me something. When I got into high school, it didn't seem that different because I had played with such a fast team. At that point I knew I was ready."
