We've all heard of the 12 days of Christmas, but in Newport, R.I., it's the 24 days of Christmas! From December 1 to 24, the City-by-the-Sea hosts a wide range of holiday events around its scenic harbor, throughout the city and at its major attractions. Plus, there's holiday fun the week after Christmas Day, all culminating on New Year's Day with the traditional noon Polar Bear Plunge for charity at Easton's Beach in Newport.Christmas In Newport traditionally kicks off on December 1 at 6pm in Washington Square with an official opening proclamation by the mayor, a tree lighting ceremony and a cannon salute by the Newport Artillery. In the days that follow, there are various holiday open houses at Newport's historic homes, museums and mansions. The days and evenings are also filled with holiday sales, choral performances, holiday balls, Christmas teas, holiday band concerts, ice skating, and so much more. A current schedule of Christmas In Newport events can be found at: http://www.christmasinnewport.org.
Along with Christmas In Newport, there are five holiday favorites that have been a tradition in Newport for many years. In fact, many proclaim that the Christmas season wouldn't be complete without them. These top holiday classics are:
