Mike Huckabee Blows His Chances at Vice Presidency with Shameless Remark at N.R.A. Convention

Vice President on the 2008 ticket with a shameless and downright disgusting remark he made while giving a speech at the National Rifle Association's annual convention. Hearing a sound from backstage while giving his speech to the N.R.A. faithful, Huckabee, who has been noted for his wit by a generally fawning press, quipped, "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak." The audience began laughing at Huckabee's remark, and continued when he made the extraordinarily insensitive remark, "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor."

Huckabee later apologized but was soundly condemned by television's political pundits. Huckabee's "joke" evoked the specter of the southern governors of the 1950s and 1960s such as Orval Faubus of Huckabee's own Arkansas and Alabama's George Wallace, who in his 1963 inauguration speech, declared himself for "Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!"

When you write an article for a site like this, why do into historical detail. I lost interest after second page. Article is too long and gets too far off track from the title. Mike Huckabee is a typical racist southerner. Having lived in the South my entire life, I can assure you he was trying to say something ugly. Typical Republican as well. They are losing their butts, but their recourse is to say as many hateful and degrading things as possible. Not try to really see what America is saying, just a shit talking session.

Wow! No shortage of people on the Right who believe in their hearts that they are! B.

Mike Huckabee has actually associated with genuine white supremacists in the past. That's more important than this stupid, insensitive remark, which probaly wasn't consciously motivated by racism. Barack Obama's association with an admirer of Farrakhan is equally disturbing, but I'm not sure what that has to do with anything in this article. I guess anyone who questions the religious right has to be on George Soros's payroll. Does anyone know how I can get in touch with him so I can get on the payroll too? It could only help my credit rating, and maybe I could move out of this crappy neighborhood I live in.

Wow--a very thorough and historically informative article (sadly). Bonus bravery points for the correct use of "niggardly" in an article about racism, too :) I did not view Huckabee's remarks as particularly racist, just extremely stupid and embarrassingly sycophantic. Interesting reading, nevertheless!

Why is it that a comment made with humor (and albeit rather poor judgment) vilifies Huckabee while Obama can hang out with a racist anti-semite like Rev. Wright, call his own grandmother a "typical white woman" and liberals can't stop their Obama worship long enough to even consider this blatant double standard?

Mike Huckabee is just gutsy enough to say what was on his mind and let the political correctness movement go wherever they wanted. He has the guts to stand up to the criticism of the liberal suck up media and not be worried about their response to him. Good for him!

This article's combination of solid facts with flimsy logic impresses me. Gun owners joke about anti-gun types' gun phobias. If anything, Huckabee's lack of concern that his remark would be heard in the context of racial violence suggests that he's probably NOT a racist, that he would have (and may have) made similar jokes about White anti-gun people. There are valid reasons for not supporting Huckabee, but if this joke is the only evidence anyone has that he's a racist, then using it to "prove" that he's a racist actually proves that you are prejudiced against Southerners. (Also that you have a low opinion of African-Americans' intelligence. I've tutored 13-year-olds who could probably spot more of the logical errors in this article than I did.)

It's like the media outcry about Hillary Clinton quoting stats. She is not a racist, far from it. Where is your bloviating about Obama and his precious Rev Wright? Where is your outrage about Obama come lately excuses for the comments of his precious Rev Wright? Why aren't you questioning why this man sat in a church for 20 years listening to Rev Wright's crap? Sure you aren't sponsored by George Soros? That is where your one sided narrow-mindedness zooms in. Another day, another innocent quip from a politician, another left loony bin goes whacko - right sweetie?
