America has been watching and voting all season long. Elation and disappointment sets in each week, as contestant after contestant is sent packing. Cries of outrage are heard from the fallen contestant's fan club. The club was just positive that their favorite should win.

Was it because their favorite had the most talent and deserved to win? Not necessarily. Many hold that American Idol has become a popularity contest, with overall talent having a backseat. Young girls scream and cry over having just a glimpse of these newly crowned "teen idols." And young girls text their votes, even for the simple reason of, "OMG, he's so cute!"

So, now we are down to two: David Cook and David Archuleta. America has chosen them as the last two standing, left to face off in the finale. America will choose the winner. But on what merits will either of the two Davids win on? The winner of American Idol is supposed to be chosen based on their over all package presentation. So, let's take a look at these two guy's "overall package."

Talent

David Cook and David Archuleta both have talent, or they wouldn't have gotten as far as they have, no matter how "cute" they are. Someone out there is surely voting based on talent. So, yes, they both have the talent to sing a song. But to what degree does that talent reach? David Cook seems to have a much wider range in this field. He has the talent to not only sing the song, but to rearrange it to make it his own. He certainly proved this with his version of "Billie Jean."

David Archuleta, on the other hand, seems to miss this mark of talent. Several forum posts have stated that he has become, "very boring" in his song choices. While he is quite capable of singing a beautiful ballad, this seems to be his only genre. The few attempts he has made to liven up his style, has been less than complimentary to him. Some fear that he has reached his potential.

Bobby: thanks for your input, but you also have your facts wrong. David Cook did a Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean (not Doxology's). Ryan Seacrest announced that it was Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean before David C performed it, but so many people didn't view the actual show that night but based their opinions on shortened YouTube clips that eliminated that fact, so a lot of misinformation has been posted on various sites. David C. 's version of Eleanor Rigby was based on a combination of different covers, of which Doxology was one. David C. has been very careful to give credit in interviews leading up to his performances as to whose cover he was using. However, more often than not, the producers left those credits on the cutting room floor - or did not announce it on the live show. I believe this was done to start a controversy and increase ratings.

Great analysis! :-)

I'll be surprised it the judges clear opinion about Archuletta doesn't tip the balance in his favor but it'd be nice to be surprised about that. Simon sure didn't look happy about having to say that Archuletta did a better job.....but he said so anyway. I do think Archuletta was more reliable the final night but I'm a fan of Cook, too. THey have very different styles and I think Archuletta is still maturing and growing as a performer. Although many like him just as he is, I believe he has untapped potential as well.

I haven't really been following this but you've made me excited about it anyway! Nicely done.

Check Chris Cornell's album Carry On. It has the version of "Billie Jean" on it. Not exactly original, are we, david?

I think the father muddling into things will be a wild card that could jinx things with the judges - or not. Who knows? I'm terrible at predicting these things.

I think David Cook's "Billie Jean" performance gave him a huge advantage. The performance night, I thought it was his arrangement and thought "wow, this guy is a genius" -- with that performance I started giving David Cook much more notice than I had before. The elimination night when Ryan Seacrest mentioned it was Chris Cornell's arrangement, i was really let down. I wondered if the judges knew it wasn't his, as they were as mesmerized as I, but they didn't make any comment of it being someone else's take on it. I do sometimes wonder if he gets credit for the "Billie Jean" arrangement by many who didn't watch the second night or weren't paying attention. He has arranged a few things very interesting ways. It's cool that he knew about and gave Cornell's "Billie Jean" arrangement exposure. He's talented and has brought a lot to the competition. I think Archuleta will edge him out for the win, though. Regardless, it will be a fantastic finale.

My apologies if David Cook did indeed sing a version of "Billie Jean" already recorded by someone other than Michael Jackson. This is the only version I know of the song and I recall the judges commending him for his originality.

Why do you all keep saying Cook is original with his version of "Billie Jean"...it has been outted as a straight up copy of Doxology's version of the song they put out in 2006. This bogus hype is partially responsible for misinformed voting. Say he sang it well...which he did...but don't give him credit for the arrangement when it has been proven he didn't "make the song his own".

I am rooting for David Cook, I think he is ready for this, while David Archuletta still need to gain a little more maturity.
