By any sports logic the recent University of Miami vs. Florida International game was a contest that probably never should have been scheduled.  Miami is a big name football school, often, though not this year, ranked in the top ten in the country and frequently also leading the way in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.  Meanwhile Florida International has just recently found its way into a Division One league, has little to brag about and will likely take years to develop a program even vaguely competitive with that at the University of Miami.

Nonetheless sports scheduling being what it is the University of Miami vs. Florida International was on the books and the teams duly appeared on the gridiron for what was supposed to have been a non-league encounter that might have added a little stature to Florida International's schedule  and pretty much assured the University of Miami a "W".  It had the look of a win win game.

What should have been happening on your screen if you chose to watch the University of Miami vs. Florida International would have been the usual series of downs, running plays, field goals and an occasional touchdown.  But if you happened to arrive in front of your television at just the right ( or more appropriately the wrong ) moment you would have serious reason to wonder what was happening and why.

Not a Pretty Sight
Filmed highlights replayed on news and talk sports shows for days after the University of Miami vs. Florida International  was played showed , to the horror of viewers , young men from the University of Miami and Florida International  involved in an over the top, all out brawl.  The details for anyone who possibly missed the filmed footage, included continuous violence that extended way beyond the gratuitous pushing and shoving contact sports often provokes.  The violence was full blown, savage  and included kicking  already downed players as well as using a removed game helmet as a bludgeoning instrument.

Takeaways
  • The fighting at the University of Miami vs. Florida International game was a disgrace
  • Football started out as a recreational activity.
  • Football has developed into the most important thing happening at some colleges.
