And so we're back here again...news piece after news piece about gay marriage, because of the recent California ruling that gay couples are free to become legally married. All of a sudden now it is back to being a major election issue as conservative groups try to overturn the ruling and make another stab at putting a possible constitution ban on the ballot.

Three cheers for California, by the way.

You wonder why I'm disgruntled? Because it is 2008 and this is still an issue. Not that it should have ever been an issue in the first place. More unfortunate yet, we don't have a single presidential candidate in 2008 who fully supports the right that gays have for full legal marriage. As reported in an article written by Time's John Cloud, "What the Gay Marriage Ruling Won't Do," all three of the candidates essentially oppose gay marriage. He writes, "Gay couples in California will now be able to wed under state law, as those in Massachusetts can, but their marriages will still be something less than what straight Californians enjoy... Neither candidate would end federal discrimination against gays who want to marry."

So, yes, my feathers are ruffled. I just have a few things I'd like to say to those opposed to gay marriage.

- Mind your business.

If you don't think gay marriage is "moral," then don't marry someone of your own sex. Have your marriage the way you like it, and stop trying to interfere with what's going on with your neighbor.

- Stop trying to argue about whether or not homosexuality is biological.

It is, it's been proven, but it doesn't even matter. Born with it, chose it, caused by environment, what's the difference? And who cares? You don't hear anyone lamenting over whether or not you were born straight.

- Separation of Church and State, folks.

Do we really need to go over this one again? And if you belong to a church that supports prejudice and hate, what does that say about you and the value of your opinion?

- It's a Civil Liberty

You can't legislate morality. Forcing morality on others takes away free will, and there can be no morality without free will. Fear of punishment is not selfless, after all. Second, whether or not it's moral is irrelevant anyway. People need to mind their own morality, not try to force it on others. Gay marriage does not interfere with the lives of anyone else. It is not the business of hte government or society to try to control it either way. Third, Biblical marriage isn't the only kind of marriage out there. If that were true, the drive-thru Vegas chapel and all the Justices of the Peace out there doing secular wedding ceremonies would be out of luck. What the smug, pious Pod People don't seem to be able to see is that this is only a distraction, a way to get them all up in a righteous froth about something meaningless so they don't pay attention to how they are being screwed by the government.

I also noted that it is liberals who like gay marriage the most. It is always them (shakes head). Liberals claim to be Christian when they disrespect the Bible all the time. If gay marriage is permitted, can we also allow polygamy and men and boy marriage?

I am sort of late giving a response here, but to some people the very act from gays is wrong. All civilizations on earth opposed gay marriage for a reason. I know a few gays, but I tolerate them. However, none have talked about marrying other men. I remember 20 years ago, doing anything like gay marriages was considered insane, and because people do not agree with them does not mean that they are intolerant. People who oppose gay marriages do so mostly on religious grounds. I oppose it because it is not natural at all. Did I wake up and say "I think I will be a homosexual today". Also, I remember being taught that homosexual behavior was wrong by my church pastors.

Excellent article. I very much agree with you.

Well written. Where a lot of Californians are having a problem is not the issue of gay marriage but the fact that this is a law that was created by the court, the entity constitutionally charged with interpreting law, not making it. This unfortunately opened up the door for those who have their own personal and political agendas to put this on the ballot again and prolong the fight. This was missing from your article, I think.

Last time I checked, a gay person, is still, a person... Let them lives their lives the way they see fit, just as they would let you live your life how you see fit. Nice article...

I have no doubt that homosexuality and heterosexuality both both have strong biological components. Discovering homosexuality's biological componet, once and for all, is only important because so many use the "choice" concept to validate their continued disrimination against gays. Once we discover that orientation is not a choice, this ignorant, fearful, and fundamentalist mindset will no longer be able to so easily use this drivel against their fellow citizens. Great job on this one Jennifer!

Well done Jennifer.

Thanks for a great article Jennifer. I especially like what you have to say about homosexuality being biological. I am quite sure it is, but as you point out, even if it is a choice, so what? It is nobody's business what goes on between consenting adults.

All very well put....the logic is so obvious, yet so many choose to ignore.
