In the article Step-by-Step Guide for Buying a Laptop Computer, the author lays a good foundation that explains the different types of laptop users and the different types of laptops that are available to satisfy their needs. It is sound advice to understand the type of laptop user you will be before you decide on your purchase.

Recently I went through the process of helping my daughter purchase a laptop as she started her first year in college. This was a significant decision. The computer not only had to meet her immediate needs, but also had to be adequately equipped to handle the challenges of at least four years.

When selecting a laptop for college it is highly recommended that you check on the school’s requirements and recommendations. The school she had selected gave a discount on three different computer brands and one of those was Dell. Good fortune with a previous Dell computer nudged us in that direction, and eventually the purchase of a Dell laptop. The process of selecting the right laptop would have been the same with another brand as well. The easiest way to buy a computer system is to search a big-box store and find a big box that contains “everything you need” in a laptop computer. You pay for it and plug it in. That may be the best approach for some people. The downside is that you have no opportunity to weigh-in on the options.

Freedom to select options for your laptop is good, but it also makes the choice more difficult. Dell has an online ordering system that really helps in this process. Working online, you can actually build the system you want. Different options have different costs so you can direct your money where it is most beneficial. As you are building the system you want, there is readily available help information that explains the various options. This is key information for making the best selections.

Takeaways
  • Determine the primary needs of the person who will use the laptop.
  • Purchase from a company that has resources to help your selection process.
  • Put your resources into features that will best meet your needs.
Did You Know?
The irony is that after I helped my daughter select a laptop for college she gets to take that beautiful machine with her.
