THE FUTURE AND THE HOPE: AMERICA'S MIDDLE CLASS

When Richard M. Nixon coined the term "The Silent Majority," we already knew who we were-- and we still do.

America's middle class has been appropriately known as the working class-- average citizens whose time and focus is on providing for our families or taking care of our families or both, just the basic everyday living of our everyday lives.

What happened? How did the middle class population go from being recognized as the norm of American society to being virtually invisible-- and, in contrast, the louder and more visible opposing classes demanding to be seen as the "acceptable" lifestyles?

Perhaps it is time for America's middle class to stop being silent, to stop being invisible.

There were a couple of reasons why I found it necessary to write THE FUTURE AND THE HOPE: AMERICA'S MIDDLE CLASS. First, I have personally experienced the types of difficulties which can arise when people do not have a frame-of-reference by which to understand the "attitudes, behavior, and lifestyle" differences between the three main class groups. Hopefully this book will shed some light on the how and why of these differences.

Second, if you go into your favorite media-source of "what is making the news today," you will see that the middle class population is rarely represented. As average citizens living everyday lives isn't really newsworthy, the backlash of this fact is many people take the individuals, behaviors, and problems of those who do make the news as representing "the American way of life." Not only is this a mistake, it also accounts for nothing constructive is being done in terms of finding solutions for the problems which American society faces-- because, when such problems are seen as "the norm," too many view it as nothing more than "an acceptable lifestyle," rather than significant problems which need to be addressed.
