Bad breath also known as halitosis is an embarrassing and frustrating condition. Many people have excellent hygiene practices but still have bad breath. There are many little known causes of bad breath. Did you know tonsils can cause chronic bad breath? This article will discuss proper hygiene practices as well as little known causes of bad breath and treatments.

Hygiene

Brush teeth at least 2xday.

Brush tongue at least 2xday. The tongue can be a source of bad breath.

Floss at least 2xday. Plaque and food between teeth can be a source of bad breath.

Optional: Mouthwash 1 or 2xday. Try a mouthwash made for dry mouth. Dry mouth mouthwashes tend to be helpful with bad breath.

Little Known Causes of Bad Breath

Tonsils

Some people have large tonsils and/or large pockets in their tonsils. Food can get lodged in the tonsils causing chronic bad breath. Gargling with mouth wash or salt water can help to dislodge the food and reduce or remove bad breath.

Sinuses

Sinus conditions are a big cause of bad breath. Sinuses due to allergies, colds, or chronic sinusitis are big bad breath culprits. Nasal irrigation with salt water is very beneficial in sinus conditions and results in reducing or removing bad breath. A doctor should be consulted before using nasal irrigation.

Constipation

Constipation, especially chronic constipation can cause bad breath. Eating more fiber helps to relieve constipation and therefore cure constipation caused bad breath.

Dental problems

Gum disease, cavities and infected teeth can cause bad breath. See a dentist immediately if you are experiencing dental problems.

Dry mouth

Dry mouth can cause bad breath. Good hygiene and mouthwashes designed for dry mouth are usually successful in treating this type of bad breath.

Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can cause bad breath. Short of quiting, good hygiene can reduce bad breath.

Illness

When a person is ill, they will often have bad breath. When the person recovers the bad breath should disappear. If you are ill, it is best to see a doctor.
