While nothing about working in a fast food restaurant is top secret, some of the things done by these workers are. People come in and out of these places daily some frequenting two or ore times a day, in a very trusting manner. Now in no way does this mean that every worker and every restaurant is like this, just in my own experience here are some of the things I have seen or heard.

The five or even sometimes 10-second rule does apply in a lot of fast food places. For those of you who do not know what this is, it means if the person drops food on the floor and no body sees, or if they can just simply pick it up in the time frame above, it is still good. What? Yes, this is true; you could be eating food off of the nasty restaurant back-line floor. It is unreal what people will do to keep the place running. Some reasons behind why someone would pick food off the floor is the restaurant may be busy, it might be the last of that product available, or the people might just be lazy and gross. No matter what the reason, it is not right.

The ketchup dispensers in some fast food places are never cleaned. This came from an actual worker at a very popular fast food restaurant. There may be maggots in the bottom of that dispenser. Yes, I said Maggots! I have constantly noticed how dirty those things seem to be on more than one occasion. Ketchup will be so thick that you cannot get anything out of it. What do we do, we push harder until something comes out. Next time ask for packs.

Does your Tea taste a little funny? Maybe that is because the spouts are never cleaned, and get this nasty black buildup on them. If they go long enough it will mold on the inside of those spouts. They are supposed to be washed and sanitized 2 times a day. They sometimes do not get washed for months. The same thing can happen in the coke dispensers. Those nozzles are suppose to be cleaned weekly and sanitized, they aren't. They have this black gunk that builds up on the inside of that nozzle. If you notice not much coke is coming out, that is probably why. People are lazy and get away with what they can.

What's really in that "special sauce"?

Takeaways
  • We are served food that has been dropped on the floor.
  • There are maggots in the ketchup!
  • Roaches, need I say more.
Did You Know?
Americans spend more money on fast food than on higher education. That is a lot of Big Macs!!
Resources
  • Check with the local health department to see if any complaints have been filed about a certain place. The restaurant must have the last inspection posted where the customer can see it.

To add insult to idiocracy ( a lot of replies used the word IDIOT to describe others here..for shame ) it is going to get worse, not bettter for the USA ! The same generation who brought you watergate and all the other gates are now our bankers, managers, doctors, and so on. But now...now its their children, and we have even more to think about like Enron and such...year by year, generation by generation, the USA is becoming a place where right and wrong are blurred with even darker glasses. Maggots in the ketchup ? Flies will be climbing out next !

This is one of the reasons my husband and I cook our own food at home, not to mention the lack of nutrition in that fast food. I worked as a server and bartender in popular restaurants for over 20 years. You wouldn't believe some of the nasty things I've seen people do, because of their laziness, busyness, or they just plain didn't care. I would tell them not to do it or tell a manager and sometimes things changed and sometimes they didn't. I quit working at one upscale restaurant that had roaches (like in the article), and I couldn't deal with it any longer. They said they couldn't do anything about it. Another place was so filthy that I discussed it with my boss, and he said it was supposed to be like a New York deli. People expect it to be that way. Maybe people do in New York, but we live in California, and I know that most people expect sanitation and cleanliness in a restaurant no matter where they live. I've lived in several states, and California has some of the lowest sanitati

This is a ridiculous article. I am the manager of a fast food restaurant and sadly I see fewer food safety standards met in grocery stores and sit-down restaurants than in fast food. Not to mention the compliants mentioned in the article are not that serious. I would never let it fly in my restaurant but the potential for a serious foodborne illness is probably not lurking in the ice tea or ketchup. I encourage all people to watch any employees in any company who handle their food. Are they washing their hands? Are they wearing gloves? If they are, did they wash their hands first? Did they touch themselves, trashes, or anything else other than your food? This behavior has the potential to cause serious illness. Dirt on the floor, old tea, and old ketchup is gross and unprofessional but it is also not the rule and not likely to make you sick. It gets old hearing the poor standard fast food restaurants supposedly run their establishment by. There are some of us who pride the

What an idiot! Will, the minimum wage is not the problem! The problem is human decency, not that i am surprised by the actions of a few morons. People make choices in life!

Dont think that Pizza Hut is any different. The Pizza Hut that I worked at in Springfield, IL... The last night I worked there, we gt a big order right around closing time, and it pissed off one of the pizza cooks, so he spit a BIG lugee in the pizza, then coveed it with cheese, cooked it and sent it out for delivery. I informed management, and the manager didnt do a thing about it. So I quit. I will never have Pizza Hut again.

Honestly, this is tame. I've avoided fast food since 1997 after a festive evening praising the toilet after some Taco Bell. But I've known folks that have been ticked off by customers and added a few ingredients not on the menu to their dishes. Actually, in any restaurant I've worked in, or witnessed from friends, the establishments themselves are rather clean. The most disgusting episodes occurred due to customer behavior and attitude. The customer isn't always right and I still have yet to figure out why some idiots go into any eatery and disrespect the employees as if they have higher social status. You just don't mess with people that prepare the food you wanna eat.

This makes me not want to eat fast food...

This doesn't surprise me at all. I have to say, though, that at both Pizza Huts my boyfriend worked at, the tea and soda nozzles were taken off and cleaned at the end of every night. That's at least one good thing.
