I am a true believer of the first amendment, which includes freedom of speech as well as freedom of press. And in a nation such as ours we should all have the right to speak what is on our minds, or blog it on the Internet. And that is what landed one young man into trouble.

Cody Basham, a 23 year old Texas prison guard openly bloged about his hatred toward inmates and called his superiors "retarded". On a blog since removed from the Uber.com site. Basham said "all I think about is taking the first chance I get to blast an inmates face off with a shotgun."

The text was saved however and can now be read on DMJ: Drew Myers Journal here. Basham's words are now circulating the Internet, and many people believe he should be fired . Obviously this man has much contempt for his job, and openly admits it. He speaks about "assisting inmates to the ground" and "applying chemical agents" to inmates if they do not obey him.

The question is, does this young man pose a threat to inmates and his fellow employees? It will remain to be seen if he does indeed get fired for this.

Thank you for this post, I agree that his entire post needed to have been read to get an accurate understanding of the situation. Also I work at the same unit he does, and he though did hate his job did not ever go above what policy said to do. Its just a shit hole job that he ranted about, not anything he ever did. Also In the position that he worked, it was his job to think about shooting inmates. I appriacte that someone thought about his right to freedom of speech and to blow of so steam from having shit and contaminated blood thrown on him, and bosses who didn't care.

I have to agree with Deez, I would love to see the whole post and not just some of the flashy, attention grabbing quotes that sell. I would also like to see how that post compares to the rest of his blogs. It could very well be that we are only seeing one snapshot of a very bad day in the life of someone who has a job that I wouldn't ever want to touch with a ten-THOUSAND foot pole. I don't think that many people could walk into a prison every day, deal with the people we have deemed unfit to be allowed in the rest of civilization, and not occasionally need to vent some serious steam.

...they have acted on and would probably continue to act upon their fantasies and desires to murder others, I could not.

Speaking as a C/O I know where this guy is coming from. It's a place called stress. I did take the effort to read his comments and first off, I would like to see his entire blog, not just excerpts from it. I am probably the nicest and most honest guy you could ever hope to meet and I don't think I could ever kill anyone with just a few obvious exception, the first being to protect my family and second to preserve my own life. Did you notice "in the line of duty" was not mentioned. I have asked myself time and again if I could shoot an escaping inmate and I honestly don't think I could and if I absolutely ordered to I don't know if I could live with the knowledge I took someones life. With all that said I have been stressed to such an extreme inside the walls of the institution that I myself have had fantasies of killing some of the asshole inmates I deal with. Would I act upon it...NO! Have I verbalized this fantasy...YES! The difference between Me and some of the murderers I watch is

Excellent reporting on this!

I agree with Dan Mage's insight. Mr. Basham may not be safe anywhere. But he certainly has the wrong job. The last thing inmates need in their midst is a dangerous sadist who can take any nasty action he pleases--in the name of the law and get away with it. Excellent article and topic, Dee.

My experience with prison staff is that there's a Bell Curve. Some people actually are really trying to help, the majority are just there for their paychecks and will live you alone if you leave them alone. Then there's another minority at the other end of the spectrum, who are dangerous sadists and criminals who are every bit as dangerous as the worst of the inmates. These individuals are viewed as unprofessional "loose cannons" by many of their colleagues, but much like the convicts that they guard, prison guards generally are loathe to "snitch" on each other. Therefore it's important for the public to get involved when these individuals surface; they are a danger to the general public too.
