Should You Dye Your Dog's Hair?

There are many people out there who think that it would be a "cool" idea to dye their dog's fur. Although your dog may look cute in an unnatural shade of pink or blue, is this really a good thing to do? Is it ethical to dye your dog's fur? Are there any problems
which can arise when you dye a dog's hair? Here are some of the things that you should take into consideration.

How Will Your Dog's Skin Feel?

If you have ever dyed your hair before, you probably already know that it can cause you to experience a slight tingling feeling. Unlike a person, dogs are unable to understand the whole entire concept of hair dye. How will dye feel on your dog's hair and skin? Unfortunately, no one can really tell you except for Fido himself. It is important to keep in mind that hair which is designed for humans is likely to cause a dog to experience itching and irritation - mainly because it has not been designed for dogs. This is one of the main reasons to avoid dying a dog's fur.

Will Your Dog Try to Lick the Dye?

In order to change hair color, the dye will need to remain on the hair for a certain amount of time. During this time, it is likely that your dog will try to lick the hair, which ultimately will cause him to ingest some of the dye. No matter what type of dye you decide to use on your dog's fur, there is a good chance that it contains a decent amount of chemicals. Most of these chemicals should probably not be ingested by any living creature. If your dog does happen to swallow any of the dye, it is important to contact the veterinarian or a Poison Control Center. Both of these places should be able to provide you with information on what to do.

It does not matter if you dye your dogs hair as long as it is not a toxic product. Your dog does not care as long as you love him, feed him, train him and take him to the vets. If you want to thin k about injustice check out the situation in Haiti 600 miles off the coast of florida. People are starving there now, the water IS TOXIC, parasites are endemic. Now there is something for you to get upset about, and to actually go DO something about!

Using flea products are much more harmful to your dog than doggie hair dye too!

If you think it is just stupid well then, thats your opinion. As a groomer I can say it part of being a doggie hairstylist. They make dye for dogs- it is easy to get from a groomers supplier and it is VERY mild. It is a matter of putting it on and rinsing it off. It is not unethical and inhumane. The dog knows no difference between this and getting a regular bath. It should ALWAYS be done by a professional who knows what is safe and comfortable for your dog but other than that... All you people saying it is cruel- get over yourselves. If done professionally it is totally harmless. What is crueler is making your dog live on a diet such as IAMS, Science Diet, Purina, Pedigree or any other commercial dog diet (I can't even call it food)

It takes a special kind of stupid to use human hair dye on a dog, even more so for someone to imply such an idea. Proper dyeing of fur is done by a vet or if DIY then you use food coloring or some type of natural based product for food, usually there are also brands made specially for dogs. LOL. My god.

I am seriously considering coloring my dogs hair. I have problems with the post office and animal control here saying that my dog is outside running the neighborhood when in fact he his not! There is another dog down the street somewhere that looks just like my dog, so I figure if I change the way my dog looks, then it will prove that it is not my dog!

I am going to dye my toy poodle who is cream colored, gray or "silver" as it is considered. It is difficult to find a silver poodle so I'll make one.

This is very funny - my dog would probably die if I did this. Great topic, though.

I have to say that I have never actually considered the idea of dyeing a dog's hair! I've never even dyed my own hair and I'm in my 20s! Sophie
