With the rise of fuel costs, many Americans are opting to utilize tourist options in their city or town of residence during their vacation. This vacation and travel option has come to be known as a "stay-cation." Stay-cations tend to be more cost-effective than traditional travel options, as the amount of gas and travel money spent will be significantly lower than they would be if the travel distance was further away.

Some places to travel to for a stay-cation that are generally a short distance include state wildlife parks, fishing lakes, beaches, and amusement parks, among many other options. Many of these cost little to no gas money, depending on where Americans stay in relative to the travel destination. By walking or biking to these locations, the cost of fuel would be completely eliminated, leaving more money to save or to spend while on the stay-cation.

Many cities also have a variety of free or low-cost events throughout the year for Americans to enjoy. One of these options is free concerts. These are often held at city parks or at the town square. Public libraries also host many interesting free events that are worth looking into.

State parks can be popular travel destinations for Americans on a stay-cation. Many of these parks offer camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, biking, and much more. Since the state park being visited will be in the same city as the American, he or she may already have a yearly pass, which makes this stay-cation option almost free.

Being a resident of a city will bring great access to coupons and discounts. Watch the newspapers and mail for coupons and offers in the months and weeks leading up to the stay-cation time. Save any coupons that may be beneficial, such as restaurant and amusement park coupons.

Since the American is already a resident, it will be much easier to have a new adventure every day. With coupons, discounts, and close access, the stay-cation will be very cost-effective, but will not lack fun and entertainment.

This year, for my first real vacation in about three years, money was tight and we stayed near home, visiting an amusement park located less than five miles away from our place. I used the rest of the time to catch up on reading some of my fellow writers' articles on AC, and submitted my first article since January, as well as promoting my presidential campain.

Staycations are an awesome idea. We live in Hawaii, so it's always a "staycation" for us :)

I just heard the term "stay-cations." What an interesting idea.

Great article! We usually have our vacations around our hospital stays. LOL Just kidding...we don;t really consider those to be vacations, but we try to see at least one interesting thing during the stay at the out of town hospital. It is a neat way to get to know the cities we frequent.

Coupons are an essential in a shaky economy, although things could be much worse. I saw you made it to clout 10! Congrats!

Yeah the costs of fuel are terrible and continuing to rise. I hardly go anywhere now. These costs are gonna turn us into bike riders, bus riders, even motor cyclists, and for some- couch potatoes. Ugh. Good article!

I always thought a good business would be to open a vacation idea center for local communities. This article just proves me right. I like this one.

These are all great ideas. Many people haven't taken the time to go to their local museums and parks. We're definitely taking a stay-cation this year!

Last year this is what we did...we rediscovered San Francisco, our next door neighbor, it not only saved us a lot of money but it gave us a different view this city. This year our stay-cation will be in Napa ...only 40 minutes away.

Wonderful article with a lot of great information. I usually travel about 45 minutes to Hot Springs Ar and spend the night. Gas is extremely too high!

With the price of gas now I'm not surprised by this at all. I would love to take a trip outside of my town but that's just not possible right now solely because of the cost of gas. Hopefully it won't be like this forever though because my kids are dying to go to Disney World and since I won't fly the only way we're going to get there is by driving:)

This ought to be bookmarked by all and is very timely. With gas prices out of sight, we are indeed thinking about a stay-cation ourselves, Super info here!
