Simply stated, an organic mattress is a mattress that is made out of organic materials. These mattresses are popular because there are no dioxins, pesticides, fire retardants, formaldehyde, or petrochemicals in them.
Different manufacturers use different materials. However, some materials are used more often than others. Usually there is wool in these mattresses that has been sheered from lambs in either New Zealand or France. Once the wool has been sheered, it is cleaned with a soap solution that is both chemical free and non-toxic. Sometimes these mattresses will also contain natural latex rubber.
These mattresses can be compared to a memory foam or polyurethane mattress, both of which are toxic, resulting in health problems. On the other hand, organic mattresses are both environmentally friendly and safe while being great to sleep on.
A lot of people really like organic mattresses especially those people who have allergies, orthopedic problems or simply want to only purchase items that are eco-friendly.
It is well known that lanolin is a component that is found in sheep’s wool and this component acts as a natural repellant of dust mites. Organic mattresses contain lanolin, which is good for people who want a healthier sleeping surface.
There are many other items that you can purchase to compliment your organic mattress. These items include pure wool comforters, organic comforters, organic latex mattress pads, organic cotton sheets and blankets, organic wool mattress toppers and organic wool pillows and pillowcases.
When you are purchasing an organic mattress you need to know where it was made. You should know that simply because a mattress has been advertised as being organic does not mean it is. You should be sure that there is not formaldehyde, fire retardant, synthetic or chemical foam or chemical odor reducer used. Other things that should be avoided are glue, plastic and polyester.
