Americana Decor Ideas: Patriotic Metal Star Wall Art
Metal star wall art is a hot trend in Americana home decor! Fortunately, you don't have to spend a lot of money to create your own unique wall art or have a huge amount of crafting skill. These also make for great Fourth of July hostess gifts!
For this project, you will need:
- Several sheets of twelve inch by twelve inch craft tin
OR a few old pie tins
- Star shaped stencils and/or cookie cutters
- Black fine point permanent marker
- Gloves
- Tin snips
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in True Blue
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Masking tape
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Newspaper
- Finishing nails
- Hammer
Due to the use of spray paints, it is advised that your work area be covered adequately with newspaper and in an airy space. Lay the tin or pie tins flat on your workspace. Using the star shaped stencils or cookie cutters and a black fine point permanent marker, trace the symbol onto the tin. Let the ink dry.
Wearing gloves for protection and safety, cut out the star shapes using tin snips. Carefully sand the edges of the metal shape with medium grit sandpaper to smooth and dull the sharpness.
Lay the star shapes flat on your workspace. Prime both sides of each star with two coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for several hours.
Cut strips of masking tape long enough to divide each of the points of the star in half vertically. Smooth the tape onto the primed metal with your fingers to assure adherence. Spray the exposed area of each of the stars using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red. Dry for twenty minutes before adding a second coat.
Remove every other masking tape strip from each of the metal stars. Cover the Banner Red painted areas with additional masking tape. Spray the newly exposed areas with a coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in True Blue. Just as you did with the red step, dry before adding a second coat. Remove all masking tape.
Arrange the star shapes so that they are adjoining as desired. Adhere them together using a hot glue gun and glue sticks. Once dry, using finishing nails and a hammer to hang on the wall.
